A lot of people don’t understand why Reiner was talking like that but yeah it’s because he can’t think of anything bad to say about people of paradise and even berthold on season two when they caught Eren and were talking on the tree he said “this was the best years of our lives” or something along those lines

To me it has more of a WW1 European vibe to it, less so WW2. This is reflected by the WW1 war technology and typical trench warfare. Also seemingly Ottoman equivalent in the first episode.

The way I see it is that this whole situation is an amalgamation of both world wars, and both sides have nazi and Jew traits to the point where you can’t make a real one to one comparaison with the real world. It’s great that way

A lot of people laugh or are confused by Reiner when he talks about his time on the island but you're one of the few I've seen that actually pointed out the way he was accidentally humanizing the people of Paridis. He was describing every one on the island as individuals with their own character traits and personalities. They're not just evil "devils."

yeah, maybe it's just me at my first watch too but i noticed the gaby -> eren, Falco -> armin similarities right off the bat. If anything, the lack of a Mikasa similarity on that side of the war is truly the missing ingredient in that mirroring.

Dudes, I loved Ymir too. I get why everything happened the way it did I just... more than anything I want Historia to be happy, and she was truly happy for about two minutes when she was fighting beside Ymir. Ymir was also just such a good influence for Historia all said and done. 10/10 RIP, cool character

I love how the worst thing Reiner could think of was Sasha eating a potato lol. I love how we’re seeing the different perspective in these episodes. When Gabi jumps off the train excited to be home I love contrasting her with Grisha who hated life inside the walls. But then you see Gabi just excited to be home even if it is behind the same walls as Grisha. Again it’s a different perspective

I think Falco is a mix of both honestly. He’s protective of Gabi like Mikasa is with Eren. But like you mentioned Falco also has similarities with Armin.

I’m glad you’re reading comments less often now. Smart decision. I ALWAYS see people hinting at things, or confirming or denying things, or joking about a character’s role that hints at future events, Or being sarcastic about things that hint about the plot, etc. etc. 😂

I feel like people in the comments think Reiner is being serious about the potato. He's being ironic about "the devils" highlighting things that are funny or even admirable (speaking about eren/jean charging single mindedly and people following them). He knows and loves these people and knows they're not devils but has to keep up the propaganda when back in Marley that they're devils.

Haylo's so smart. I legit had not thought much about the reason Grisha is showing his young son the basement but it totally lines up that Eren is around the age that suggests Grisha's time is about up and he needs to pass on that knowledge soon.

Ignoring people's preference for seasons, parts of the story or which studio they prefer animating and all that, can we all agree on the amount of character development characters like Reiner and Jean had/keep having? It's amazing how nuanced and deep some of them have become! Love how the two of you get so many details that take some people 2 or more watches to get. Doesn't mean you interpret them in the correct , nobody can get it all, but independent of if you do or don't it is just a breath of fresh air seeing people so attentive to details. He's definitely not. He's over the brainwashing and has been living with the devils long enough to feel deeply conflicted now. You literally see him warning Falco not to say unpatriotic things that will get him in trouble about the "honor" of inheriting one of the nine when his actual message is to "save" Gaby from it.

I love how quick Haylo picks up things fast. Like, most of the other reactors get confused and thought that Galliard was a new titan, but Haylo quickly picks up that it was Ymir's Jaw. Mad props to these girls. It really shows how much they love this show.

I've always loved how Ymir's fate is so suddenly and unceremoniously revealed, it truly showcases how the succession of Titans and the lives of those bearing that power is so quick and so meaningless to Marley and their desire for a controlled monopoly for their wars. That scene with Reiner is so powerful, the lies and propaganda about the Eldians in Paradis make Reiner's almost comical interpretation of supposed "devils" taken as absolute fact about what they believe to be monstrous people. The stigma and bias to what is essentially their own kind is disgusting but under such a controlled regime, understandable.

Yeah I agree, I think Reiner was being serious about the potato, and that makes it even more sad because after everything he's been through with them, Sasha lying about "half the potato" was one of the only "evil" acts he could think of

Its hilarious how many viewers think Reiner was actually serious about the potato. He clearly is over the propaganda and tells them in a sarcastic way that all of these are normal people. Thats why the family is shocked and why the mother stops the table talk

I don't think he's saying it sarcastically. I think he's genuinely trying to recall the worst traits he can remember about them, not realizing that he's actually humanizing them. I thought most people interpreted it that way, but maybe I'm wrong.
