Hi everyone

Well what a week! Sorry this is a little late, it felt a little weird to release an episode during the election - but we didn’t expect for it to drag on this much!

In this episode we welcome Nathan Schneider, professor of media studies at the University of Colorado Boulder, significant player in the platform co-operativism movement and the originator of the term “exit to community”

We discuss the state of platform co-operativism today, the intersections between more traditional coop communities and the emerging crypto world, the history of co-ops, and as usual we get to gleefully dunk on the mythologies of the centralised platform economy.

We will be back on schedule next week and hope this finds you well, hopefully we will be in an ever-so-slightly better world by then.

I'm really happy you're bringing co-ops into this conversation! I've often had the impression that there's huge amounts to learn from these organisations, some of which have done so well for themselves, and surely offer many lessons about democratic and decentralised institutions. But somehow it seems like awareness of these structures is not very widespread. (I found it quite funny how, for instance, the LOT2046 team are talking about turning themselves into a decentral/cooperative operation without seeming to be aware of such things existing already! No need to start from scratch!)

yes! This is also why I think Nathan is really interesting, as he has been trying to build that bridge and also clarifying the crucial point you mentioned that it we risk a lot of redundancy not paying attention to the history of coops when experimenting with these new forms :)
