As you all know, very well, we do gridless (is this how you say it in English? Anyhow, we will stick with it), 40grid and later 50grid maps, indicating the diagonal measurement of the TV we use them on.

In 2018 I had a 40” TV so that is why I started optimizing my maps to that one, thus making this size become a standard in the genre. A lot of you bought a TV this size and other creators started using it too.

As time passed, 40” TVs are hardly available anymore, but at the same time, a lot of people still use 30” ones as well. With the help of the new Steam version of Editor and other VTTs, you can easily zoom into the videos in order to get 1” with gridded maps, you can also move the background image in order to show the relevant scene on TV where the action is taking place.

You can do the same on bigger screens, as it’s rather quite simple to zoom out from the maps or to make the window smaller in order to get the proper sized grid.

We will continue making gridded maps because not everyone uses Editor. However, an argument for optimizing for 50 grids would be a larger map area, as it would mean 43,6 x 24,5 squares, whereas 40 inches only means 35 x 19,6. In other words, the map area would be 218 x 122 feet instead of 174 x 98. You can see the difference in the image below:

One such change would not mean that I can’t give you a 40” version, but instead that the map would be designed and optimized for 50. The 50” version would give you a bigger map area than the 40.

As far as the grid is concerned, the latest update for Editor is on the way, and with that, you will soon get the grid masking option back, which was available in the old edition of Editor. This way you will soon be able to make better custom grids for static or video maps.

Of course, it’s hard to find a solution that’s suitable for everyone, so I thought I’d rather ask your opinion.  So please vote, but not only regarding the grids but also pick the size of the TV or projector you use, if any.

Should you wish to give me a detailed answer, you are more than welcome to do so in the comment section.

Thanks!

Got into digital table top BECAUSE of you DynamicDungeons. I am even building a table to accomodate. We use a 50" and would be very disappointed to see the 50" go. I say the standard should be 50" but you also supply 40" as you have been.

I have a portable 40" TV I carry around with me. The 40 grid maps are clutch for me, but I can make anything work. My players don't really critique square size. I may be fortunate there.
