People always go "what's the story behind this?" When they're looking at my art.

Most of the time, there isn't one. To me, painting is about transcending language. It's about experiencing something that you can't necessarily describe in words.

Coming up with some sort of verbal justification, or story to make it "make sense" to the language side of the mind, is just not important to me. I'm actually trying to rebel against that side of the mind because I think it dominates the way we interact with the world. And I find it limiting, and shallow, and...anyways...I guess this is a rant for another time.

My point is, that I actually can point to a story on this one.

I started this as an automatic painting (see the second image.)

As I was defining it and stuff, my dog got sick. So that was on my mind while I was painting it. and I was thinking about what it would feel like to be a sick dog.

Apparently dogs have dreams that are similar to our dreams. I wonder if in his sickness he had strange dreams that felt like this. The way we have those off kilter dreams when we are sick.

This painting was also my "unwinding" painting over the past 2 weeks or so. I was busy with shows and before that trying to put together lessons and stuff to post and yeah...a lot of work...not a lot of play...I was a dull boy.

So at the end of the day I'd just work on this one for a few hours. Not rushing to finish it. Just kind of noodling around.

And this is it.
