This canvas was sitting on a shelf like this for a month or two.

I felt like I needed to figure the painting out before I could paint it. But that was preventing me from painting it. Perfectionism or something like that was telling me I couldn't paint it yet. What is it? I was thinking too much. And it just sat there for like 2 months.

Sorry if I'm repeating myself here but, I started doing these Alla Prima studies because I was getting frustrated and overwhelmed with my painting process. My paintings take weeks or months sometimes. Then one day I just decided to do a full painting in one sitting. And I really enjoyed the challenge of doing that and the painting turned out pretty good. So I started doing it more.

It built  confidence to just paint. If it doesn't turn out that good who cares, I can start a new one.

Here's the finished study.

Then I wrapped up the night with an automatic drawing that looked like this.

I like this routine because it's quick. The ideas seem to grow and blossom. Even when the study and drawing doesn't turn out the way I hoped it would, it feels like I'm in the process and not thinking about the process.
