So one of my new year's resolutions (sorta) is to watch at least one short anime series per month. This month I watched Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken (Crunchyroll), because it came highly recommended. It was pretty fun!

The series is definitely "a love letter to animation" - especially Ghibli-style animation. This made it very charming and sweet, but I must admit it didn't hit me perfectly because I am much more of a comics nerd than an animation nerd. Still, there was plenty in it that I could appreciate :)

One character that really struck me is the one I drew up there - Sayaka Kanamori. She's not the protagonist, she's the main character's friend who isn't interested in animation. She's a super shrewd businessperson and acts like the manager for the group. She's intimidating and aloof, and always seems to have an angle and a backup plan. I was really fascinated because I very rarely see this type of person portrayed in film - let alone when it's a person who is femme!! So I was really drawn to her.

I'm playing with Clip's new export feature so here's a little making of gif :) (I have tried six times to export this as a loop gif and it's only working intermittently in my browser so sorry if this doesn't end up looping =_=)

My only other beef with the show is that the title is kind of arbitrarily translated... Eizouken is not a character, Eizouken just means "film club". But, like... when they talk about it in the show, they translate it in subs as "film club". So it took me until like episode 4 to figure out that there was no character called Eizouken.... And then I tried to translate the Japanese title using google and 映像研 seems like it may translate to film club... but it might also translate to "hands off" which leads me to believe that there must be some kinda pun happening in here. So not being sure I switched the symbol in my art here to the sign on the building which is translated in the subs as "film" so if this does NOT mean film I sincerely apologize, man I really did my best here hahaha 😂

The GIF loops for me. Looks like a fun show for Ghibli fans (me!).

I have a friend who speaks, writes, etc. Japanese if you ever need short confirmation! She also lived in rural Japan for several years, so it's not just academic. 😁
