The 'transferrable skill' thing might seem extraordinary, but over and over again when I ask what people want the most in a new hire, they say they want someone:

  • reliable
  • works well with others
  • communicates effectively

... and any technical skill really is secondary to these things. If they tell you otherwise, their truth is revealed in who gets let go and who gets promoted. Build those skills wherever you are, and you'll have strength going forward :)

As someone in a tech field myself, I think employers are discovering that you can train some tech skills over time but you just cannot train people to be good with other people if they aren't. It's not easy to get people to communicate well and get along with others if they don't have that ability by the time they're in the workforce (or if they just don't think it's important).
