Original Question:

" I'm following along with your Best of WT, and it's got me thinking about the trajectory of your career. I know that you were interested in sustainable companies, and I was wondering how that has played out with job changes/layoffs, etc. Additionally, what is your process for finding ethical companies when you're looking for jobs? (It's such a different mode of job hunting from me, since I've been in social services and education for my entire life.) "

In terms of how it has played out, I think I've been pretty lucky! My first role out of University was focused on industrial energy efficiency, and it definitely cemented an interest in sustainability. The small startup (NuGreen Technologies) that I worked for briefly made scrubber systems for waste-to-energy facilities. Basically preventing particulate from getting into the air. NorthWind gave me the opportunity to work on a number of different green/positive impact projects. And my role now is focused on hydrogen fuel cells!

Being really selective with the type of companies I'm willing to work for has made job hunting a lot harder. I have to be much more patient and selective. Timing really is everything!

2021-07-19 01:21:35 I agree with you completely on trying to fix broken systems from within. I've been there/tried that, and it never works. When something is broken, it's more often than not broken at a much higher level than what I'm working with -- and that means getting change (or anything) to move forward is often not happening. I've become more and more selective and am currently in a place where the smaller location I'm at is perfect in terms of ethical services, treatment of employees, and proven track record of putting their money where their mouth is when it comes to these things. The larger group? Not necessarily, but I think you've hit the nail on the head with your first page there... Thanks for answering this one, Jam! <3 -jess

(Also, I just appreciate the amount of time and forethought you put into this! I was expecting a one-pager type of thing, so thank you even more for the breadth and depth!)

No worries, it was the most-voted question and I realized I had quite a bit to say about it. Also "You can't lol" isn't a very satisfying answer on its own haha

That's wonderful :) And yeah, near/far is another consideration when it comes to how you draw your "line". You do have to make some provisions for your own health and sanity. Life is short and you have to choose your battles, sometimes.
