These are interesting links that I found throughout the month that are more engineery...

  • This is just too cool, I had to share... have you ever wondered how the engineers at Disney create theme park experiences and animatronics? The Khan Academy created a whole course introducing students to the process of "Imagineering". I'll definitely be checking it out when I can!! Imagineering on Khan Academy  I've been having lots of conversations lately about the future of education - how to be proficient on the job now you have to be learning constantly. "Just in time" learning is the future, and in my opinion we're seeing lots of progress at the "beginner" level, and it would be great to see these types of resources applied to higher level skills :)

  • Oh man, data visualization AND music analysis? Yes please...  Vox Music's Falsetto Obsession   I really enjoyed the latest Vox Earworm video. The whole series is fantastic and I really recommend checking it out for a fascinating deep dive into the world of pop music with excellent visuals. This particular video goes above and beyond in terms of walking you through a "data journey". They had a question and set out to solve the mystery with graphs!

  • Fictiv had a great teardown of the Anki Vector robot. Vector (and other consumer robots) had such a cool moment these past few years, it's sad to see them leave the marketplace. I think teardowns like this and other assessments of what went wrong are a great way to learn as much as we can to make robot assistants better in the future.

Me IRL

Trevor and I went on a really special trip last week. We saved up for a long time and gave this trip to each other as a "birthday present" (his is in January -- that's how far I had to book in advance!) We went to an area known as the Chicoltins to go mountain biking. It's really beautiful out there, and we were even able to coordinate to have a float plane drop us off on one of the lakes! I spent 6 hours riding on the first day and over 7h riding on the second day. I saw one (1) bear. It was pretty epic :)

So what is happening to the $10 level?

Love the newsletter idea! Will we be going back to a monthly status (instead of just when you post new, finished projects)? I'm game for it, but I'm just wondering how this is going to affect the Patreon status.

Great question! To be honest I'm still figuring it out. For full transparency: - This patreon has been "per creation" since Aug 2017 when I fell very ill. (See "two years in review" https://www.patreon.com/posts/23667754 ) I knew I needed time to rebuild the way I was working. I've been focused on just creating work consistently. I think in all that time I've only charged out once. In essence it's been running on "free" mode until I figure this out! - I've been working on building up my ability to deliver content consistently at every level. So far $1, $2 and $5 are going ok I think. I don't think I can go back to doing $10 the way it was, so I'm still trying to figure out what I can add to the stack without overwhelming myself. Does that help answer the question?

No, this is *in addition* to posting status updates. I want to continue to post updates regularly at every level. The idea of the newsletter is to give people an idea of what content has been getting posted at various levels, because they don't have visibility into the activity at levels above what they've pledged.
