Time for another poll!

How do you guys feel about Binge and release shows?

There was some talk about it today in the Discord chat and I thought it would be nice to have a poll and get some feedback on how you guys feel about the binge and release shows.

In the past, Agents of SHIELD & Arrowverse were binge and release. I originally caught up on Agents of SHIELD season 6, and watched season 7 live with you all and when Buffyverse was finished Arrowverse took it's place on the regular schedule.

Now we have Once Upon A Time & The Marvel Netflix shows as binge and release shows.

The original idea for the binge and release shows was basically that I didn't have time to fully commit to reacting to those shows on a regular basis. If I found myself on a free day able to react to a bunch of episodes, I'd take the opportunity to binge one of the binge and release shows.

As time went on though, I felt more and more pressured to have them done by a certain point as I have a fear of keeping people waiting. I'd say that it would take a month to binge, but then things would come up and a one month break would turn into like 3 months. I'd feel terrible about it as I am constantly feeling I am keeping people waiting for content.

As time goes on there's also the factor that these binge and release shows are much less connection and conversation between episodes. For example, recently I've been talking about the previous episodes comments for each of the regular shows I do and I feel a lot more connected to the audience doing so, this I can't do if I binge the whole season of a show.

This also gives my editors time to breathe and gives them as much time as they like to edit the seasons as well.

Pros:

- Can be flexible on reacting to the show.

- Gives editors time to edit whenever they like.

- Avoiding spoilers.

Cons:

- Not much communication with Patrons/YouTube comments sections.

- Can sometimes take too long.

Again, I don't know if I'll ever find the time to do binge and release shows on the regular. I just want some feedback on how you guys feel about it.

I like the binge shows. That format does a solid job of protecting you from spoilers.

Josh Lomax

I dont have an issue with binge shows. As far as I'm concerned, avoiding spoilers is the top thing and the easiest way to do that is to binge it

Danny Thomas

I like the Binge and release shows because it something unique and different, no other reactor does this on their channels. I think Chuck and Teen wolf should be a binge and release shows as well ?

Franklin

I like the binge and release shows, the only thing I absolutely hate about it is you can’t read comments in between episodes but that’s the only con I don’t really like. I do appreciate all the hard work you put into these reactions. Keep up the good work!

Zoot!

I didn't really like the long gaps between seasons personally (AoS was an exercise in patience!). I also think the community connection from reading comments and such is important to building an audience. On those 2 points I'd say no to binge and release shows, but to be honest I never had a huge problem with them. I picked "hate" but it's more of a neutral opinion.

It's not that I hate bing and release shows, but these kind of shows do prevent any possible interaction with the community. You can’t read comments in between episodes and therefore can't get feedback and perhaps see things in a different light or get certain answers. Also the argument of time or spoilers to me doesn't really stand, One can get simly get spoiled with any show at any moment. Also any time gain at some point it lost later on when you have to binge a show. Personally I do believe that in the end just having regular shows is better. However, I do support what ever it is you want to do most.

Kevin Tran

I don't mind the binge and release format, but I understand people's complaints. Here's a suggestion if you hate it you can just disregard it. You can keep binge and release if it works better for you, but in order to help with the lack of connection and community you can do recap episodes basically reviewing what you released that week. The recap will be based on people's comments to sort of jog your memory of what you watched and you can review and respond to people's comments. For example this week you released Once Upon Time 4x22 and 4x23. So you would post two additional videos sometime this week responding to peple's comments about your reaction and essentially recapping what you thought of the episode. Again if you think its too much work or hate the idea disregard this. But this is a small suggestion that might help with the lack of connection on the binge and release format. Since I do like that you review people's comments on the Arrowverse shows.

I have already mentioned this before but perhaps people here might like to read my view on it too if they don't have Discord. I am very much against Binge and Release, I feel if 2 episodes of OUAT and Marvelverse were to be watched perhaps 2 weeks ahead time this would free up time for her to watch other shows and pilots. It would also mean she'd get through these shows much faster if there wasn't a waiting time between Seasons and this would mean new shows could come much sooner as well. And like said above it would also give way for more interaction with her fans. Which might be a good thing too, Provided people respect her views and don't post spoilers. As I edit Supernatural, Charmed and Legacies and a show that I can not mention yet. I can not weigh in on the added "pro" that it would give more time to breathe. All I can say is that personally I didn't ask for it. I was also not against it. And will soon be going back to 4 edits a week.

Luis Garcia

I'm fine with binge shows, but if the wait time is too long, you could maybe release episodes by story arc instead of by season. I know some shows have more than one story arc per season, so that could work.

Zach Hershman

I think Netflix shows that have shorter seasons work better with binge and release. They can be quite frustrating as a viewer if you misinterpret something and that misinterpretation alters your view going forward in the season. I personally think the interaction with your fan base is important and am really enjoying you starting episodes by responding to comments from the previous episode. All that said, burning yourself out by doing too much each week isn’t something any of us want.

Tom Tattershall

I voted "hate binge and release" but it's more dislike than hate, for many of the reasons given by you and others. I prefer regular reactions. Also, I'm not wild about the week off between seasons of the regular shows. It's not a big deal as you still release a lot of content on a weekly and monthly(pilots) basis. You do what works for you.

Wyatt

I think it really depends on the show. I like Arrowverse as a week to week show. Whereas Daredevil and Jessica Jones are good binge and release shows. Main thing I think is the length of the show in episodes per season or series length. Marvel verse has a lot of episodes but season are pretty short making it a good binge and release

Anonymous

I think if you're wanting to do some binge shows you could focus on shows with not many episodes. Invincible for example is only 8 episodes long and I binged it in one day after it had all come out. IMO avoiding spoilers is a huge benefit of binging. People can think they aren't spoiling things when they comment something like: "I can't wait till they see that scene with so-and-so in episode 3!". I get that they're excited but I feel like that just ruins the surprise and/or the pacing that the creators of the show intended.

Zoot!

"and a show that I can not mention yet" - tease!

Zoot!

Perhaps the distinction could be made based on how the shows were originally released. Like some Netflix shows were full season dumps - that might be more ideal for binge and release. Network shows like The Flash and such seem to work best on a weekly basis.

I think a more organic approach to watching may be better. The first thing I recommend is taking care of yourself and yours. You may be getting a chunk of change from Patreons, but each of us is only paying a small bit. We can't really make demands especially since you seem to put out a lot of content compared to other reactors. Now, I know the word organic will set some triggers off, but that's half the point. What I really mean is, don't hold yourself to arbitrary limits. To me, watching a show only once or twice a week seems like a very painful way to watch a show. On the other hand, pushing yourself to binge a complete 20+ episode season before putting out any episodes again seems entirely painful, and can take away from the joy of watching. Some episodes absolutely require you watch the next, like the 2nd in a 2 parter or like when Angel was losing his soul. To not watch the next is basically a crime against humanity. On the same note, sometimes episodes come with such a heavy emotional toll that you simply need to stop process, like the Body. Instead, binge chunks, and let you decide how big a chunk is based on the show. If a episode has you down, switch to another show for a while and come back later. I guess the big worry would be falling behind. Well, you can have a last possible release date for episodes. Binging will build up your count for a show, and if you end up 8 episodes past the last possible release date for one of them, you've taken the pressure off. You can happily binge all you want, but then you have a track for each show on how many episodes you are ahead on, so if any get low, you know which one to focus on. Also, by binging chunks, you aren't so far ahead that you can't keep up with comments for the currently released episodes. A couple other reactors simply put in the episode description that they've currently watched up to such and such episode so commenters can keep that in mind so they don't spoil past what you've watched. Like I said, it's an idea. I really enjoy your channel and the last thing i would want is for you to burn out. Do what works for you.

I don’t like binge and release shows because it’s frustrating to get the reaction to the season finale and then have to wait months for the next season premiere. If you’re going to have binge and release shows, I think it’s better to do it with shorter shows (ones with less episodes per season) because with OUAT for example, each season has 22-26 episodes and then we just have to wait even longer to see more reactions. Obviously if you’re too busy to make certain shows regular, then I totally understand, but I think some of the longer ones aren’t great as binge and release

catwhowalksbyhimself

It's bonus stuff that we might not get otherwise. It's like a freebie, and who doesn't like freebies?

Zach Faulkner

I voted dislike on them. Now I am still newer to the community. I just finished S3 of OUAT earlier today. So I have not had to really experience the 'lay off' between seasons that I always hear you talk about. But logging on earlier and seeing you completed S4 today made me nervous because I really want to binge S4 but I don't want to finish it and then have to wait months for S5 to begin. I guess my thought is can you do the best of both worlds? So for example you just finished S4 today. With your trend of doing 2 episodes released per week, that means it took about 11 weeks of posting for you to post all of S4 start to finish. So without knowing your life schedule part of me thinks 'During that 11 weeks she couldn't have also watched most/all of S5?' that way next week S5 eps 1-2 are already ready to go without any lay over. So I think that's could possibly work to keep the binge style but just eliminate the long breaks between seasons? It's tough to know without us knowing exactly what your normal day to day life looks like!

Jon

Both options have pros so I am good with either.

Nicole Christie

I like binge and release. I rather you react to them then not at all. I can deal with no comments since I myself don’t comment (much) and the break I can deal with to. Again at least you’re reacting to the show.

Lens G Sol

It takes too long between the marvel Netflix shows. That's my only complaint

Zac Heim

I love binge and release because I love watching on ep then knowing the next one is going to their ready for me to watch

Brandon Wiesner

For me, it's not so black and white. I don't love the idea of binge and release but I don't hate it either. To me, it doesn't matter whether you do either for each show. What I would like to see though is consistency in the schedule. If you do a season of a show that's binge and release, typically there is a long break in between, which can be tough waiting through. If you were able to binge the next season by the time you finished uploading your reactions to the previous one, so that there is only the typical week long break in between seasons, then that would be ideal. That way, you can get caught up faster and free up the schedule for the next show in the queue, as well as get to the finales quicker and maybe even catch up to live faster as well. I know your days are pretty packed, so this is not something that is likely possible in the near future but maybe something to think about.

Zach Hershman

Another suggestion for binge and release on shows with long seasons is do it in blocks. Maybe binge 8 episodes and then release them. After you have released two weeks (four episodes) you can work on binging the next block of 8. This would allow input from us. If you needed you could add a week break between each block of 8 episodes. That would essentially give you 4 weeks to watch the next 8 episodes to start releasing them.

Respectfully, binge and release shows should take the slots that regular shows leave when you finish them. Start new shows as binge and release for a while before they get more dominance

Anonymous

Also, Once Upon A Time deserves weekly viewing. I hate the gaps between seasons since I basically watch your reaction to the episodes the day they come out

Steve

i dig binge and release. i'm always in favor of making life easier on folks who help out, so that element is nice. however, my main reason is that i like that you watch the season without comments. i'm a bit of a spoiler freak so i don't want people to tell me if they even liked a movie/show. so, if you get a poll winner you can assume people like it, but getting comments every week means people telling you which episodes are the exciting ones. with binge and release i don't stress each week to see who says what.

Anonymous

I want you to watch at your own pace so you're not under as much pressure. We understand that you have a lot on your plate with many shows/projects as well as your personal life. Whatever you do, do not burn yourself out....we all love you and if you get burnt out and for some reason quit or take a long hiatus, then who will do the reactions that we all love lol? Just go at your own pace. I'm good with whatever way you like to do it. Maybe ask the editors which way is better for them. Maybe you and the editors can discuss how to approach this. We all love you and I'm sure most, if not all, of us would gladly choose whichever way is easiest for you and editors since you all are the ones doing the work 🙂

I like the binge and release because it adds variety. Sometimes the regular shows are hard to follow every week or are hard to get excited about, especially referring to Arrowverse.,too much of one thing or too much similarity. I enjoy some of them more than others, and to have a fresh batch of different shows is great. I will say I don’t think you should feel you have to put pressure on yourself to get content out. You should take time for your life when you want. I support a couple other channels and the difference in content put out for the price is absurd. You put out the most content I have seen for the price. If it is too much work take your time, do your regular shows and relax. I don’t have a ton of expectations for your channel.
