The reason Matt decided to take the case was so that he can get closer to the man in the suit who hired them and gain information.

A trial must always come to a unanimous decision either Guilty or Not Guilty. A hung jury is also called a a deadlocked jury. Which just means that the jury was unable to come to a Unanimous decision. This always results in a mistrial. So at least one juror was voting against everybody else. Fisk was tampering with the jury by ensuring at least one juror would always vote against the rest of the jurors. This resulted in a mistrial and the defendant being freed, the DA could still have tried to bring his case back to trial if they could make a better case. But in the mean time the defendant would be able to skip town and go into hiding. Don’t worry about needing to have a good grasp of trial law to watch this show, they throw a lot of jargon around occasionally but it’s mostly about punching people in the face and the moral ramifications of said face punching.

Jury protocol varies quite a bit from country to country, but some of it is fairly common. I'm in the UK, so the US will probably differ somewhat, but hopefully this will give an idea of how it works. As Matt said in his speech, a jury is supposed to reach a verdict using only the facts presented in court, with no outside biases or influences - when someone attempts to influence a juror's vote outside of the court (through threats, intimidation etc), that's jury tampering (which is a crime in itself). Usually, all of the jurors must agree in order to reach a verdict - however long it takes to do so. If a significant time has passed and all the members are not able to agree, the jury is hung. Under certain circumstances (at least in the UK), the judge can then ask for a majority verdict (10-2 is the minimum in the UK), instead of a unanimous one, but this depends on a number of factors (and I'm not sure it applies in the US). If the jury is still hung, then the trial is over, and the judge will decide how to continue based on the law or precedent - it's usually a mistrial, so that the case can be brought again and retried with a new jury.

Worth noting that this system is used mostly in the US - Commonwealth countries (AFAIK) generally use the British system of: First Class Honours (1st), Upper Second Class Honours (2:1), Lower Second Class Honours (2:2), Third Class Honours (3rd), Ordinary.

"You killed someone, you don't deserve a lawyer" - erm...thats not how the law works, I am afraid Shan :)

Do bowling alleys in Australia all have cameras? I mean, it's possible that some might have them, but it is hardly a foregone conclusion. And I'm sure this experienced hitman would have cased the joint first and would know that they don't have them. So I'm confused why you think it would have definitely been caught on camera.

Okay, you answered my question by saying that they have cameras everywhere there. I guess I should have waited to comment until the end of the reaction. Just so you know, in the U.S. and Canada where I live, it would really be up to the particular business if they had security cameras. I once worked at a convenience store that had cameras, but then the business changed hands and the new person did not bother to have them, just kept the signs up saying that the premises were monitored, hoping that would dissuade anyone from doing anything illegal.
