"Spuffy had a really nice moment which was interrupted and I'm offended"

seekingoutfriday

So I always enjoy this episode, even though others don't. Willow/Andrew was funny, Anya/Xander/Andrew was great, and the Spuffy scenes are intense and their last conversation is one of my favorites in the show.

The big bad has finally revealed itself as the first, well thanks to miss buffy for figuring it out.. so no more screaming at our screens 😂 I absolutely loved the spuffy scene in the basement, even after what he attempted to do to buffy she still has faith in him.

Zoot!

Woddles! Edit: As per Shan, it's Waddles! :)

Holi117

the initiative didn't set a trigger... its got nothing to do with his chip or them, just that usually its seen in military movies and stuff when they make sleeper agents. Was Jason Bourne a sleeper agent lol? The first has been using and manipulating Spike since he got back to Sunnydale adding to his crazy, maybe taking advantage of how weakened Spike was mentally after getting his soul? It has managed to create a mental trigger in his brain, like how Xander described. It seems to me like when the trigger is used, Spike switches personality, and doesn't feel the pain of the chip or something. Or maybe the chip doesnt activate because the trigger is using a different part in his brain? I have no idea lol. So glad we can finally talk about the first. Have been worried about accidentally saying it or something this whole time haha. I adore the Spuffy moment in the basement as well... "I believe in you Spike!" aweee. So gutted there is no more Buffy for 2 weeks! waaah

I think Shan deserves a prize for figuring out it was the first....possibly a little pig of her own she can name "waddles" :p

Great reaction. I was very excited for you when you remembered the Bringers and figured out who the Big Bad was. Also? That scene in the basement, where Buffy tells Spike she believes in him, is one of my favorite scenes in this show, and the look on your face during that scene was almost as good as the scene itself.

I didn't scream at you, not even once. Just enjoyed watching you figure it out. It's dangerous enough there, but if you ever visit Sunnydale, remember to STAY ABOVE GROUND! Avoid basements, cellars, sewage tunnels, mausoleums, crypts, caverns, caves, archaeological digs, secret government installations or anything else that will lead you underground. It's very dangerous.

"He's primed, I'll be pumping him in no time."

Jarrod Wild

I like Shan's reference to Scooby Doo. SMG was Daphne! Maybe Scooby Doo and BTVS share the same universe.

I always thought this episode really turned the tension up to 11, and the ending is pretty freaky. Watcher's Council blown up, The First releasing a "real vampire" that looks like Nosferatu, and the Bringers staging a simultaneous world-wide attack. Interestingly enough, this is the shortest length episode of the series.

Dontrell Durant

Time for me to drop my monthly spoiler for you Shan. Its The First. Spoiler complete. I love your wavey hair.

Great fight scene, poor Buffy's broken house. Maybe the season starts to get less confusing since you figured out a couple of things this episode. OK, let's take a break from the Spuffy ship and get back to the Stop It! ship :)

Paul Gibson

The story xander told about Anya, he was describing himself and how he felt since leaving her

MittenCrab

This...THIS...is why ASR should never be spoiled. There's nothing better than the moment the wheels spin and the penny drops. The excitement of discovery and conclusion can be shared and enjoyed vicariously. Suddenly the years fall away and you're back watching the episode for the first time. Magic.

UTU49

Buffy has faith in Spike. I don't know if Buffy has spike in Faith.

UTU49

Great comment MittenCrab. I'm glad that I didn't let it slip, because I hadn't even thought about the fact that the First had not been identified yet.

Will

I was watching you on a fairly large television, Shan. :D And yes, you were smart. :D

Michael Roach

I'm in awe of your intellect...I know I didn't make that connection the first time I saw it. What a joy to watch the realization come across your face.

UTU49

I guess a large tv would have made her look EVEN SMARTER.

UTU49

The schedule doesn't matter to me cuz I love all 3 of Buffy, Angel, and Firefly. But if I only liked Buffy, then I guess I would be sad.

FernWithy

I literally clapped when Shan recognized the Bringers. :D

Brandon Wiesner

I'm just glad the first wasn't spoiled for her.

Ryan Martinez

I have a tendency of "booping" your nose on my laptop when you realize where the storyline is going. Multiple boops this episode when you realized The Bringers and The First from season 3 are the big bad.

Bellatronics

Love your reaction Shan, such a joy to watch. Willow threatening Andrew outside the butcher’s shop is most awesome and cute. :D I also love Anya & Xander’s interrogation of Andrew in this ep :) Well done Shan. You should feel smart for figuring it out! :) I gave you a little clap! You can see that you were really enjoying the scene in the basement between Spike & Buffy. I love that scene too. Spike was trying so hard to get her to stake him, but instead she tells him she believes in him. Spike is scared about what the First can use him for, and has lost faith in himself, but Buffy hasn’t. Yes, SO RUDE! How dare the demon fighters interrupt their moment - lol. Aw, poor Spikey, getting tortured again - the writers did just like getting his shirt off, just like The First. I always thought it was very weird that the ‘real vampire’ on Buffy, looks completely different than how Angel did when he became his ‘real demon self’ in Pylea. So the only thing that I can figure, is that the magic of Pylea makes Angel’s demon change - present it self differently. Just like the sun doesn’t harm him. This ‘real vampire’ we saw here, does look rather like the Master. With the advancement in effects since season 1 - maybe this is what Joss always wanted The Master to look like? I always think that this vamp is based on the old Nosferatu vampire, Count Orlok ( from the 1922 film). The first vampire on film! That vamp had clawed hands and bat like ears - and so does this one - oh, and bald. I get the impression that Joss always wanted to give his vamps clawed hands when vamped out, like in Nosferatu - but they just didn’t have the time and money to spend in the make up trailer to do that. The reason for my thinking that, is that vamps tend to have clawed hands in all the Buffy comics that came out while Btvs was on air, and occasionally in some others. [These comics were like fill in stories, like things that happened between episodes. They were approved by Joss, and fitted in with canon, but were not canon.] Just my theory.

I didn't figure it out before the reveal but I knew what the reveal would be. Back when the episodes were aired a good friend and I would talk at length about the episodes, speculating and theorizing about what we had seen. After episode 2 he predicted that the Big Bad would be The First. While we didn't know for sure that he was correct until this episode when we saw the bringers it was a total Hell Yeah Fist Pump moment.

Anonymous

What we saw on Angel was a pure Vampire, as Anya said in season 3 all the Demons on earth are tainted.

Anonymous

Speaking of the trigger, I loved Anya's reply: "The horse?" LOL Didn't know if Shan would get that reference.

Anonymous

Shan, I never cease to be amazed at your skill of picking up things from previous episodes and seasons. You are really good at seeing and putting together clues from long ago episodes in Buffy. Bravo! You go, girl!!!

Ron Fehr

Shan. I've said this before, but I love to watch the wheels turning when you figure things out. You have every right to be proud of yourself. Amazing that you even remember the exact title of the episode in season three. About Andrew- I think his storyline was supposed to be separate from Buffy's until this episode.

Khanach

Haha! You're so dumb for not figuring it out sooner! We all new what was happening! Especially after we were told, of course, because it was 4 years after "Amends" and most of us had completely forgot about that episode :P Great episode, great reaction, they're gonna be two loooooong weeks. Ps: You're not taking a break this month, right? Right??

"You don't know hurt. This last year's gonna seem like cake after what I put you and your friends through, and I am not a fan of easy death. Fact is, the whole good versus evil, balancing the scales thing? I'm over it. I'm done with the mortal coil. But believe me, I'm going for a big finish."

Anonymous

Great reaction. Love it how you figure things out just before the reveal.

Besides avoiding basements, there are a few other things going on in this episode that I really enjoy so time for a little ramble. We tend to equate age with wisdom, or at least with acquired knowledge. Does that apply to an elemental force like 'evil'? By offering us two reasons for why the seal didn't open when Jonathon died (not enough blood / anemic blood) there is an implication that FE doesn't actually know why the seal didn't open. Evil never needed to learn that the stove was hot or not to get to close to the edge of the cliff. It never needed to learn how to protect itself because it can't be hurt. Has it ever needed to develop a plan for anything? Buffy, OTOH, has grown a lot as a person since Angel asked “Am I a thing worth saving?” Seventeen-year-old Buffy tried to explain about fighting evil and doing good but she kept coming back to how much she loved him. Twenty-one-year-old Buffy doesn't hesitate when Spike asks the same thing. “You are” she says, because someone trying to do good, trying to be better, deserves to be helped rather than cast aside and forgotten. Spike and Anya have both given themselves up for death in order to protect others from their evil deeds. Self-sacrifice is something Buffy understands so they've got her on their side now. We viewers have also tended to equate the Watchers Council with 'good' because they said that they were good. Was there an example of them being 'good' in the series? Buffy once said that “Their opinions don't matter.” Does that include Angel who wanted to die rather than risk hurting her? Or Spike who suffered torture to get his soul back for her? Even Jonathon wanted to join Buffy's Gang and hang out at her house. Not to mention that Buffy has tried to kill Willow, Xander, Dawn and Anya and they're all upstairs putting her house back together again. Maybe she IS at least a little deserving of the power she has if she elicits that kind of commitment from those around her. I kinda feel like Dawn could have ended that fight pretty quickly with a heartfelt GET OUT, GET OUT, GET OUT!!!

One of my favourite scenes of the series will be during your 'Buffy week'. So hard being patient!

I really like how this show focuses so much on growth and character. in the beginning of the first season, Buffy was basically demon=kill. Angel taught her there was more complexity to the situation. Beyond that, Angelus taught her that personal feelings will blind ones view of another's actions. She, and the rest of the team, have now come to the conclusion that not only killing (or attempts at killing) are something to consider, but the motives behind them. You mentioned their loyalty to Buffy despite her trying to kill them. I kind of think it goes beyond that. They know why she tried to. Willow, well she was the big bad of s6. Also her Dawn and Xander know that time in the basement was due to the influence of a demon warping her mind. Of course, they can take into account that Buffy fought off the effects long enough to save them from herself. Anya, well, she had crossed the line, so Buffy as the Slayer had to kill her. In other comments I've put forth the thought that Anya killed as an attempt as suicide by Slayer. So she really couldn't be mad at Buffy at trying then could she. Why I don't think they've stuck with her beyond those attempts on their lives is due to blind loyalty is because of s4e2 when Buffy wanted to kill her roommate. They couldn't find an acceptable motive there, and so they tried to capture Buffy. In the same way, loyalty has a big count, but motive counts as much. The same goes with Buffy and Spike. Every one else keeps leaning towards Spike needing to die, but Buffy actually saw Spike, could see what was driving him. Not just loyalty or actions, but what was causing the actions. Such a great show. When I see current super hero shows, they pale in comparison writing wise, I can barely make it through an episode.

Finally I can mention this. A while ago, when watching, I think s7e02 of another reactor, I made a speculative comment. I'm not going to say I knew the First was the big bad for this season, but I just speculated it may be. I was discussing Spikes weird behavior and correlated to Angel's experience with getting his soul back. That made me think about Amends and how the visions torturing Angel changed form in the same way as the visions torturing Spike. Same animation and same style of speaking. Anyways, long story long, I ended up getting a bunch of comments flaming me for putting a spoiler into the comments and a demand I delete it. So, because their comments made it a spoiler by confirming my speculation, I had to delete it. Talking about sucking. So I can't claim to be smart about it as I had it spoiled for me a while ago. Any ways, a little whining about an annoyance out of the way. Nice reaction. This season is getting relentless. I do have to say, having the First be the big bad is pretty nerve racking. How does one attack something not only stronger than anything fought before, but has no corporeal form and has basically been around longer than anything else. Kind of seems like the whole s5 dilemma all over again without a key to work with.
