This is my interpretation of Philip after this episode I don’t think he is using this new group at all I just think he will do monstrous things to keep his new significant other and daughter alive He kills Martinez for 2 reasons First of all Martinez flat out told Philip that he didn’t know if he could protect the group which is a mistake lol And secondly Martinez is a part of his past thus why he is screaming I don’t want it as he is killing him He doesn’t want that part of his past constantly around him Also he kills Pete because Pete can’t make the hard choices Philip can So in Philip’s mind the only way for his new family to live on is if he kills Martinez and Pete and then takes over That’s what makes him The Governor I don’t think he is trying to play anyone I just think it naturally goes that way because he genuinely believes this is the best possible way that his new family will survive And that’s why he has become the monster that he is.

Ok I'll weigh in on the Brian/Philip thing Knowing that the Governor's real name according to the show was "Philip" but according to the comics was "Brian", I can see how you'd be inclined to believe that he just used the name "Brian" AFTER. he saw it written on the side of that barn. BUT... We have to take into account that this show is somewhat based on the comic books... And the comic books state the Governor (Brian) had a brother named Philip What if (on the show) the Governor WAS. actually lying about his name all along? (He DID. claim he didn't like to tell people his name and he's a notorious liar) What if the Governor in his defeated state was actually walking back home (NOT. to Woodbury ...But his REAL. home... The place he lived BEFORE. the outbreak) And the people who were trying to call out for "Brian" were actually calling out for him I mean... You COULD. be right and his real name is Philip ...But we can't know for sure Given as said this is all pretty much based on the comics in some way or another 4x06 COULD. have just given the fans of the comics a little nod and to be honest that'd be much more interesting than shrugging it off and saying "Nah.. His name is Philip" since they'd actually be sticking to the source material (Pay attention Arrowverse writers!)

If you ever become really intrigued with The Governor's past, I think you'll find that the only Walking Dead book novel series ever made outside of the comic book series are solely based on The Governor, as well as the story of Woodbury. From The Governor's and others perspectives, the novels also begin at the start of the outbreak and eventually overlap with the comic book storylines showing their point of view, and they are canon with the comics.
