As for the Doctor's age, most fans figure his age is somewhat fuzzy. With all the time travel, the odd way he ages, the time he's spent (in the classic show) in multiple forms, in alternate between generation forms, in stasis, in other universes with different time flows, in Galifrey, which is outside of the flow of normal time, it's all a bit fuzzy. It's likely even the Doctor himself doesn't know for sure, and 900 years is just his best guess. As for the fans "correcting" you in saying it was the first episode, it can get a bit confusing, since there are three different Episode 1s at this point. (The current season is once again Season 1, I guess because Disney is taking it over so it's the first season on that platform? It's not really a reboot or restart of any kind though.) Fans are used to specifying NuWho or Classic who (even though they officially are the same series and don't have different names), because it can be confusing if you don't. But you don't know any of that, and aren't a longtime fan of the show, so they shouldn't expect you to know the lingo, or the fan names or the naming conventions, so I do sympathize and apologize for my fellow Who fans. For many of us, it WAS our first episode and was indeed officially episode one.
