I think this may be the first time I've found one of the little transformers in these supplies with the windings straight on the top of each other.  So the only thing between you and the mains is the lacquer on two tightly wrapped bits of thin copper wire.

I clearly have to take more of the transformers  in these things to bits.

Inside some dodgy Chinese USB power supplies from Greece.

I'd like to thank Filippos for sending these VERY shady USB chargers which he bought from a Chinese outlet in Greece. The flat one has one of the scariest transformers yet with no extra insulation between the secondary and sense windings. It also had a rather odd output capability of around just 20mA before the voltage plummeted.

Perhaps a dodgy award (the dodge?) would be in order as a yearly summary of dodgy electronics?

I was toying with doing a "most dangerous product" video, but simply couldn't narrow it down from all the dangerous ones I have collected over the year.

Nice video, scary.. I'm old school as well and single bobbin transformers scare me too.. I like a little more insulation between me and the mains. Keep up the great job mate.

The lack of proper winding insulation is rather chilling and the 20ma delivery was comical. Makes you want to make sure you have a proper approval from a legitimate approval organization like CSA or cUL and the like. This reminds me of a recent Amazon item which was a USB charger AND ionizer. I am romped to get it and check it out. Not sure if having extra high voltage around the charging circuit would do any good to anything plug into it however.

Well, it did have a (fraudulent) CE mark! The importer into the EU is legally liable for CE compliance declarations, the issue is enforcement. It needs a few companies to get heavy fines and directors locked up before things have a hope of improvement.

CE is practically on everything nowadays.

If you have any trusted fans, somebody might volunteer—or you can hire somebody at a very modest rate to do personal assistant work like this. You do not have to be rich. Food for thought.
