This was the final Top Gear Christmas special of the Clarkson-Hammond-May era and coincidentally they have just finished filming their final Grand Tour special.😞

The number plate was absolutely not intentional. Clarkson said in the first part that he chose the car because the 928 holds a special place in his heart. There were only two 928 GTs for sale at the time, one of which is what he ended up with, that had the number plate since it's original registration. For more info someone on reddit posted excerpts from Richard Porter's book, about his time writing for Top Gear, and where he goes into more detail about the whole event. https://www.reddit.com/r/thegrandtour/comments/t7fscu/comment/hzjmnv7/ Obviously it is just the account of one of the people who could be making excuses, but a lot of the claims line up with verifiable information, so I'm inclined to believe him.

I just read your link, and it all adds up, I always assumed it was just Jeremy's sense of humor but I stand corrected. It's a shame their SAT-PHONE couldn't get hold of the Chilean Embassy because they would have sent the army to the border.
