It's time for THE HIGH BROW MOVIE STREAM.

Let's get thoughtful and contemplative up in this shit! Though I'm also consciously picking movies that are vivid, strange, visceral, and compelling, but I honestly have no idea how this will go (especially as I haven't seen a lot of these since college). Either I'm excited to share some really wonderful stuff.

The stream will be TODAY over at https://www.twitch.tv/filmcrithulk and it will start at noon. All times pacific!

With that, let's go to the HIGH BROW MOVIE LINE UP, which actually is having a couple programming changes!

Noon - Pre-Show!

1220pm - Beauty and the Beast (1946) - Cocteau's adaptation of the famous story is simply one of the most beautiful films ever made. There are STILL some shots that impress with the vivid technique. Plus, it's one of those films I saw as a kid that made fall in love with older films. I can think of no better way to kick things off.

155pm - Persona (1966) - For decades, it seemed like whenever someone wanted to make fun of "art films" they would shoot it in Black and White and basically ape the chess scene from Bergman's The Seventh Seal. But it is his 1966 film Persona that more closely plays to this purely artistic exploration of identity and selfhood. And it perfectly works as one of those HMMM SYMBOLISM YOU SAY movies for budding film nerds. I'm excited.

320pm - Cleo from 5 to 7 (1962) - Let's let it fly with some beautiful ennui! Agnes Varda's seminal classic captures the modern sensibility by juxtaposing a world dressed up to perfection with the aching, devastating feelings that hide under the surface. Can't wait to be SAD with y'all.

450pm - Abouna (2002) - Originally programmed Touki Bouki in this slot, but I completely forgot that that film has some pretty gnarly scenes of animal cruelty and that's just not what I'm looking for on this stream. I really wanted to show a film out of Africa so we're going to go with the much loved and vaunted Abouna, which I've never seen! We'll discover whatever joys it holds together!

620pm - The Mirror (1975) - There was no way we weren't showing a Tarkovsky movie (he's one of my faves) and this movie, which is largely just a stream of consciousness trip through memories of his mother, felt like the ideal one to pair with the other films in the series... Also, it's the shortest film so that helps in these marathon things.

810pm - Certified Copy (2010) - Of all the films in the stream, this recent-ish work from Abbas Kiarostami is the one I'm most excited to watch people discover. Especially going along in the chat for all the "wait, what?" reactions, not that it's even really trying to confuse you (if you've seen, don't say a word). Also don't read a thing about it. I'm putting it in the primetime slot for a reason. Don't miss it.

1000pm - Holy Motors (2012) - Probably the most seen of the entries in this lineup, but it's gonna be electric. I can't wait for new people to discover Leos Carax's esoteric, episodic, yet terrifically entertaining modern masterpiece

1200am - Secret Screening #1 - Warning, it's about horniness.

140am - Secret Screening #2 - Another switch from the original programming, but I'm excited.

I keep circling back to Certified Copy and rethinking it. Very glad I stuck around for that one in particular.
