Hey all, time for the monthly twitch stream!

I know we're a few weeks past the day in question, but this was the earliest weekend I could do and besides it's ANTI-fourth of July movies. Which is really just to say it's about movies that have some kind of subversive streak, patriotic irony or satire, or re-evaluation of American History.

As always it will be at https://www.twitch.tv/filmcrithulk and starting this Friday, July 15th at Noon Pacific time!

Onto the lineup!

Noon - pre roll!

1215pm - The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence - John Ford's late period western is many things: a look back on the history of the western, his own career, and in many ways feels like both an apology and a testament to many more progressive (or at least more moderate) ideas than he ever let on before - but its' a film that ended up being a weird inspiration for The Dark Knight?

220 pm - The Watermelon Woman - Cheryl Dunye's 1996 romantic comedy / drama is noted for it's many firsts, but it's an incredibly thoughtful, ambitious, loving, and often quite funny look at her character's life through the prism of a documentary-within-the-film about the "a black actress from the 1930s known for playing the stereotypical "mammy" roles relegated to black actresses during the period."

415 pm - American Graffiti - George Lucas's second breakout feature before that space story took over his life. What may seem a rambling, funny, odd duck of a story is still laser focused on its ultimate point. Can't wait for new comers.

6pm - Do the Right Thing - You can't make a movie about the horrible state of America without looking to the movie that perhaps best exemplifies it. There's so little I need to say. It's one of the best films ever made - and utterly captures the heat, metaphorical and literal, of summer.

805 pm - Blowout - [clap emoji meme thing] We. Have. Nothing. But. Respect. For. Brian. DePalma. In. This. House! Anyone who is like "oh he's just copying Hitchcock" always makes me be like "yeah, and when I play basketball, I'm just copying Michael Jordan." And if you want a film that hits at the Anti-American-ness on the nose while also constructing a tight as heck thriller with stellar filmmaking, this is the one.

955pm - ROBOCOP - Guess I'm just still in the mood for showing some of the best films ever made. And yes, Robocop counts. It's the America in a nutshell, a perfect have-your-cake-and-eat-it-too satire about the journey to humanity and justice within broken systems. Heck, the subtitle once upon a time was supposed to be "American Jesus," which says a lot given the end result.

1140 pm - Secret Screening #1

150am -  Secret Screening #2

Shameful admission, I have not seen DO THE RIGHT THING, though it's been on my "list" for a while. I can't wait for Friday.
