We've got a docco coming out in two weeks about the blood transfusion industry. We travel from bloodbanks in the ghetto where poor people donate their blood to make ends meet, all the way to the exclusive, private transfusion clinics where we take part in expensive blood procedures reserved for rich, tech bros.

I'm so excited for this! I'm at the University of Michigan. This past year the graduate student instructors went on strike, demanding higher wages among other things. At a rally several graduate students I spoke to mentioned that they had to sell their plasma at least once a month just to make ends meet. It's an insane market that preys on young, working people.

Yeah, it's huge in the military and universities, but also just for struggling people in general. Coincidentally, the university of Michigan published an awesome study tracking for-profit bloodbanks, and they pretty much exclusively pop up in really low income areas.

Sorry for the delay, we've simultaneously been filming another big docco, and ran into some pretty scary issues with the police, so that's been taking up a lot of our time. But the bloodbank one is ready to go, we just need to get past all the community-guidelines checks on youtube

ew!!! but actually, im wondering, do they even sort out the plasma by age range before using it on those rich customers? did you find any info on that? cause not only young people "donate" their plasma and as opposed to blood id guess there are much fewer regulations as to how you have to process or label the substance so it would be easier to obfuscate who it came from (maybe). would be interesting to get a look into the administrative processes of one of those blood transfusions schemes.

You mixed up plasma donation with blood donation couple of times. You get your blood back after it filtrates the cytoplasm and your body replenishes for it in around 72 hours. However, in the US you can donate blood 6 times a year which is still fucked up as the 'standard' is once every 3-4 months, so there is that..

In Ireland, donating blood is done for no compensation by people who feel it's important. Needless to say there's always a scarcity of it! But I still think that's a better system than paying people for it over and over again... The woman's face in the full video while she's trying to comprehend people in Australia only being allowed to give once a month was crazy. "I don't know why they do that."
