So that was really something, eah? Glad you got so much out of it man. A movie of depth and beauty with superb acting and brilliant, brilliant writing. Two Academy Awards into the bargain; one for Williams (richly deserved) and one for Best Original Screenplay (even more deserving.) It's been one of my favourite movies since I first saw it. So glad to spend the afternoon with you fine people going over it. What heart this movie has, and I think a career best for almost everyone in it. Except Ben Affleck who shines more brightly in two other movies - The Town and Argo. Great films if you've not seen them. His brother, Casey, who plays Morgan, the put upon butt of all the jokes, has turned in two five star performances in his own career; The Assasination Of Jessie James By The Coward Robert Ford (where he plays the aforementioned coward) and the brilliant Gone Baby Gone based on Dennis Lehane's superb novel, where he's a low-level private investigator hired to find a missing kid ... what a film that is, and it was Ben's directorial debut. (Lehane himself is THE greatest crime thriller writer on the planet, his masterpiece Mystic River is a storming movie if you haven't seen it.). The Affleck's, like Damon, are from Massachusetts and so know intimately the local languages and customs; Affleck brings it all to bear in this film, in Gone Baby Gone (set in South Boston where Lehane is from) and in The Town (based on a book by Chuck Hogan, another Southie kid. Affleck has never been better than he is in that film as an armed robber with a conscience. Such a pleasure to watch this film with you two this afternoon and I cannot wait for the next one :)

Such an incredible and beautifully told story! They deserved all the recognition. Everything from the performances to the witting was exceptional. Adding those Ben Affleck flicks to our list! On Mystic River, you will rarely see more exceptional performances, exceptional writing and exceptional directing. Lehane's script sticks almost word for word to his book. Eastwood directs. The cast is a film fan's dream come true; Tim Robbins of Shawshank, Sean Penn, Kevin Bacon, Laura Linney, Larry Fishburne and Marcia Gay Hayden ... and there is not one of them who is not absolutely brilliant. The supporting cast is just as good. Honestly, I would love to watch your reaction to that, because it's so, so wonderfully realised. I listened to the audiobook recently and it blew me away just as the book and the movie did. That's the mark of brilliance.
