ROBOCOP (1987) FULL LENGTH REACTION - WATCH ALONG

Comments

James Forrest

So that was the most fun watch-along yet :) Glad you guys liked it so much, and particularly that you enjoyed the depth and the layers which Verhoeven and his team wove through the story. Because it could have been a very generic sci-fi movie in the wrong hands. But Verhoeven - who hated it at first - was convinced, by friends (his wife loved it) that the real heart of the story was about a man losing, and then finding, his identiy again ... the scene that made him want to do it was actually the one where Murphy visits his former home ... which I could see you guys just loved. Verhoeven, who of course is Dutch, didn't get the satire at first but once he was convinced (I believe the screenwriter gave him some comic books and discussed that sort of humour with him) he clued in immediately and made sure it was laced all the way through the film. There are few movies as quoteable as a result. Ronny Cox - known only for playing Good Guys at that point - was one of the first people cast, as Dick Jones. His performance in the role was so exceptional that Verhoeven cast him as the bad guy in Total Recall as well. (A blindingly good movie which I bet is recommended by everyone on your Patreon who loved this; it is superb.) Miguel Ferrer who was sublime as the slippery Bob Morton, was actually out of work at the time ... and that's the only reason he took the film. It was a career maker for him. Amazing performance. But of course Peter Weller and Nancy Allen as Murphy and Lewis are just tremendous ... although I have to admit that Kurtwood Smith, to me, steals the whole film as Clarence Boddicker. He improvised a lot of his own performance especially that memorable, grotesque moment where he spits on the desk in the police station :) Verhoeven's real genius was in making the movie as subversive as it is. The whole gun twirling cowboy cleaning up the town, the city falling to corruption and crime is specificially designed to seem as if the movie is going to be a right-wing Reaganite's dream come true, a sort of sci-fi version of Death Wish, a mad hang-em-and-flog-em fantasy ... but it utterly turns it on its head by making the private company pillaging the state assets being the real villains of the film ... even the in-jokes about dead Presidents from California (killed by the Star Wars defence platform too; Reagan's own mad concept) are two fingers stuck up at The Gipper ... it's so beautifully underplayed and nuanced though that not everyone gets it first time. Verhoeven even laced the story with allegories to Jesus. Right from the start he saw the parallels; death and resurrection being the main ones. How he is betrayed by his friends, as in the parking lot scene ... even the way he shoots the climax in the Steel Mill has a moment where it appears RoboCop is walking on the water ... Verhoeven is such a genius at hinting at stuff through the little things. Total Recall has a lot of his classic in-jokes in it. RoboCop's sequals are awful, mostly because they are played as straight action films ... there's none of that subserviseness or depth. For all that stuff you have to see Starship Troopers ... THE most misunderstood movie of Verhoeven's career if all you're doing is looking at the surface. Even the casting is deliberate ... you will never see so many chiselled jaws and perfectly honed female figures with beautiful faces; at first I thought the casting was horrendous but I now look upon it as just one element of that film's genius, and it's sheer genius. Starship Troopers is probably the most subversie film Hollywood has ever made without realising that's what was being constructed! :) I am so, so, so glad you guys enjoyed this and what a pleasure it was to watch it and your reactions at the same time! The thing I loved about you guys from the off was that your reactions are so emotional, and you get so involved! It's great to see people who appreciate the movies as much as me, and get such a kick of the great moments, the set-pieces ... but also the depth and what the films are actually about. What a great choice of film that was. Good way to spend a Saturday night whilst I was working away on stuff! I so look forward to what you guys have up next ... and definitely put Starship Troopers and Total Recall on your list. But the first one especially, it's phenomenal. It's one of those films which gets better the more you strip it down.

Ah man! Loved reading this. First off thank you for choosing to spend your Saturday watching this with us. We are so glad you had a fun time! Agreed with everything you said. This movie could have easily been just another action flick but the themes they chose to focus on and better yet the way they are executed are absolutely flawless. I wasn't expecting to get emotional watching this because it just didn't seem like that kind of movie but man! Not only did we have a great time, the movie itself surprised us and it was way more than we were expecting. Adding Starship Troopers and Total Recall to our Sci-Fi list! Thank you for the recommendations ❤️

Great reaction guys! Joined your patreon as soon as I saw the community notification, lol. RoboCop is a low key masterpiece! No wasted scenes, most of the practical effects still holds up today, and is considered one of the best sci-fi action movies of all time. Don't know if you guys noticed, but the character of Clarence Boddicker (Kurtwood Smith) also played Red Foreman on That's 70's Show. There is a RoboCop 2, that came out a few years later. It's worth a watch, but certaintly doesn't hold a candle to the original. The studio wanted to rush the sequel asap, but Paul Verhoeven (director) already signed on to direct Total Recall and therefore couldn't commit. While still bloody and brutal, the tone of the movie is noticeably different without Verhoeven's involvement. Regarding the future of RoboCop, there was a rumour earlier this year that Chris Evans was in negotiations to play Murphy in RoboCop Returns; which would be a rebooted sequel to the original. However, this project has been in development hell for awhile. Ever since Peter Weller passed on reprising his role (probably due to age) which then made Neill Blomkamp (District 9 director) leave the project shortly after. There was another director who took the reins (Abe Forsythe), but to my knowledge nothing has been updated and has been in limbo for awhile now. Amazon bought MGM last year, and announced that it was interested in creating a Robocop movie and TV series (link below) https://collider.com/robocop-reboot-prime-video/ If you guys are gamers, Peter Weller came back to do the voice of Murphy in the RoboCop: Rogue City game, which was released on all consoles just this week. It has gotten good reviews so far! Whatever you do -- DO NOT watch Robocop 3. MGM tried to make him into a campy kid's comic book hero with the violence and gore toned down considerably. Needless to say, it wasn’t well received with audiences.

I know I'm late, but I'm catching up on all your previous reactions. Loved watching this with you guys! Speaking of charismatic villains and sci-fi, I highly recommend Demolition Man. Don't know if you guys have seen it, but Wesley Snipes is awesome in that.
