“He’s a gooner!” - Eric, on this version of The Riddler

On this month’s super-sized We ❤️ Movies, we’re chatting about a real excellent-ass comic book adventure, The Batman! Yes, it’s a long one, but what would we cut here? How incredible is Michael Giacchino’s score? How magnificently do David Fincher Vibes (DFVs) pair with Gotham City? Is this the best on-screen depiction of the “Bat & the Cat” relationship? How rad are all these massive LED-screened Gotham cityscapes? And Jeffrey Wright: best Jim Gordon ever? PLUS: Would The Riddler let those tweakers at the abandoned orphanage watch Seinfeld DVDs?

The Batman stars Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Jeffrey Wright, Colin Farrell, Paul Dano, John Turturro, Andy Serkis, Peter Sarsgaard, Jayme Lawson, Gil Perez-Abraham, Peter McDonald, Con O’Neill, Alex Ferns, Rupert Penry-Jones, Hana Hrzic, Sandra Dickinson, and Barry Keoghan as You-Know-Who; directed by Matt Reeves.

Be sure to snag your tickets early for our final live shows of the year! We’ll be rounding out 2024 with shows in Seattle, Portland (OR), and Boston! Head over to our website for all ticketing info!

You guys have to best content

nadia

this was one of my most anticipated WLMs!!! can’t wait to listen to the ep at work!!

Charlie

I’m going through tough time atm and this ep feels like an olive branch from the universe. These guys are the best around

Michael Daniels

I haven't listened to this episode yet so if it is brought up I might be being redundant. But if you haven't seen Caped Crusader, the Batman series on Prime yet, you are really missing out on an X-Men 97 quality animated series.

Tim O'Connor

Chris saying that most major movies now are too dark and too long... PREACH IT

Tim O'Connor

This movie rocks, though. I remember seeing it in the theater and getting the biggest smile when I realized I was gonna get a Batmobile car chase.

Jaime Lee Ezell

“If Kenneth Branagh has a flavor it’s those little finger sandwiches with tea time” 😆

Moose

Oh man. I’m stoked right now. Love the Batman didn’t think y’all would be covering it anytime soon. My morning is made.

John Locke

This movie ruimed the Nolan films for me. I used to get motivated once a year to watch that trilogy. Now I only want to watch this masterpiece. Patterson and Dano are so freaking good. And oh top of that we get a catwoman who isn't just a pretty face And you top it off with Jeffrey Wright. Damn.

Chris Tobias

A travesty that this score wasn't even nominated for the academy award

Matt

A Batman movie where he's basically Kurt Cobain and he fights the Zodiac Killer? At this point they're just making this for me personally.

DMAC

I could make a thumb drive, Mark!

Felipe Sobreiro

TIL this is the same Matt Reeves that also directed former episode THE PALLBEARER (!!)

Mark Ibarra

I liked Colin Farrell's Penguin a lot, but cmon. John Carroll Lynch saves you all kinds of money and fat pads.

jribs

I like this movie but I’ll duck for cover and say I think it’s too long, overstuffed, and lit poorly. UPDATE: Cabin just made 2/3 of my points. Truly my spirit animal.

Jamie

So jealous of Eric for seeing Daft Punk in 2007

Watch_N_Rewatch

The opening score when Batman is narrating and the criminals look into the dark ... Unbelievable scene and please don't judge but, that score "Can't fight city Halloween" was my Spotify most played song last year lmao

Busiris

This movie just gets better to me every time I watch it, so I was excited to have an excuse to revisit. I agree with Cabin that the movie is dark but I give the movie credit for still making it easy for me to see what's going on. Maybe it's just the 4k disc, but I thought to myself how the movie was dark but at least I could still see everything. And one note on the gourd-looking mask, I don't know if they explicitly say it in the movie, but I assumed it was drop-shaped, and they refer to addicts as "drop heads" so he's a literal drop head.

Jonnie Sea

The Riddler hating Rey from SW is top notch comedy!

Nuña Bisness

3x in theatres baby!!!!

Lar

I knew it was gonna be long and I tried to pace my soda drinking accordingly but I tell ya, I was struggling towards the end. My mom waited to watch it at home and said she watched it in like hour long blocks. Great movie though. Can’t wait for the sequel, if it comes. (And shoutout to Chris for pointing out it’s too dark, bc I haven’t tried to watch it at home yet but I know I’ll have to do so at like, night, in my closet)

Lar

Also I think why I really like this movie and Birds of Prey is that it’s such small stakes. Like, it’s mostly mobsters and powerless criminals, and that’s just more compelling.

Mike Kling

Colin Farrell in the Penguin makeup looks like Richard Kind.

Darcy

I'd listen to We Love Talking, a movie-free WHM production. I'd be into We Hate Talking, too

Jason

Does the face make up on Farrell's Penguin give anyone else vibes of Judge Valkenheiser from Nothing But Trouble? Or just me?

Dennis Stack

I completely agree with the guys in that this movie is a hair too long but I have absolutely no idea what to cut because it all works

Joey T

I've listened to almost all of the W♥️M catalog but it was worth resubscribing just for this one! You guys nailed the tone of the episode with well thought out criticisms and the wacky humor I expect from your content.

Jack

Giacchino's Batman theme is derived from the same chord change in Something in the Way, which is pretty cool

Mark Ibarra

I wouldn't mind one bit if they released an April Fool's Day episode where they discussed baseball or something.

Philly

Is it me or is the riddler not the infamous “duct tape guy”?

AlsoNamedB0rt

You can cut the last half hour. Also, if Batman walked at 1.5 speed that would shave a solid 17 minutes off the movie.

AlsoNamedB0rt

The next movie Batman should just fight a villain named “Bad Apple.” “Holy institutional racism, Batman! Is it true that the system itself is merely an instrument of oppression that only serves to protect the status quo through violence and intimidation?” “Haha. Don’t be silly, Boy Wonder. The police, like the rich and powerful, are of course an unmitigated force for justice and peace. Alas, I’m afraid this has all the trappings of that nefarious nuisance Bad Apple. Once again he has used his corruption-gas bomb to hypnotize upstanding police into doing naughty deeds, making the pure and innocent cops look like baddies by association.”

Elliott Tipton

I hope the sequel uses aspects of No Mans Land but in the same ways it used the elements of long Halloween. Gangs and suchs

Alexander Farr

One of those movies where everyone involved brought their A game.

Todd B

Going off the discussion about elements of other movies in this, I have ask - The Batmobile reveal. Was there anyone else getting kind of a vibe of Carpenter's Christine? Cause damn, I was feeling it and I was there for it.

Robert K.

Ooo! Andrew's thoughts on his recent The Hobbit Trilogy watch please!

Meara Brady

Need 10000000% more making fun of RFK Jr.!!!

Alex Fry

The Penguin’s club is the much beloved and much missed Printworks in South London, which was an ex printing factory turned into a club that closed down last year to be demolished for flats that no one will be able to afford. A genuinely incredible space that was unlike any club anywhere I’ve ever been to, and it’s so cool for it to be preserved on film by Matt Reeves.

Steven sadauskas

Steve pulling out a pitch perfect RFK Jr absolutely broke me

Monster Mittenz

The romance between Selina and Batman like maaaybe a week after her girlfriend was brutally murdered felt like that typical comphet shit where sapphic love isn't taken seriously, especially since they refer to her as her "friend" though the whole movie. It felt shoehorned in to keep guys interested but it's fine, it's pretty common I guess. That first contact lens scene though where he talks shit to her, orders her around and then touches her face without asking is really gross. Perfect movie aside from that so it's kind of a shame...

Matthew Lloyd

I love this monologue "Bruce Wayne, the orphan. Orphan. Living in some tower over the park isn't being an orphan. Looking down on everyone, with all that money. Don't you tell me. Do you know what being an orphan is? It's 30 kids to a room. 12 years old and already a drophead, numbing the pain. You wake up screaming with rats chewing your fingers. And every winter, one of the babies die because it's so cold. But, oh, no. Let's talk about the billionaire with the lying, dead daddy, because at least the money makes it go down easy"

Matthew Lloyd

Its not venom its adrenaline.

Matthew Lloyd

I love it very much. Its a combination of the long halloween, the first two Batman: earth one books and the films the guys mentioned.

Brendan 'Timbzy' Timbs

I guess if you try really hard to be offended for a fictional character, yeah you'll find negatives in everything but who wants to live like that?

Monster Mittenz

You're so right, I've spent my whole life in a homophobic patriarchy but I should just try not fixing or caring about anything. Maybe if I were one of the good ones and stopped nagging men about problems I'd find happiness. One of the good ones, right? You should speak to mental health professional about developing empathy.

Barrett Robe

The new beetlejuice is terrible. I’m sorry that’s off subject but went to go see it last night and it still pisses me off.

Aaron

Fuji from the Stormwatch comics is another character that's cumming all the time.

Lindsay McReynolds

Love this movie and this episode! On my second (or third) rewatch of the film I realized the gourd head mask is actually a drop head mask but not until you see the drugs at the penguins club. Anyway thought that was a cool detail, you guys are awesome!

Rose Esposito

I think Chris D'Elia? He's definitely a huge skeeze with underage girls, and I think he thought Snapchat was foolproof bc it disappears. Or does it??

Rose Esposito

I was scream-laughing in my car at Con O'Neill as our beloved Betfair duo. He was great on Our Flag Means Death, RIPD that show 💔

Matt Nelson

I just want to note for posterity re: THE BATMAN's length that this is one of the few movies these days that is longer than the podcast episode about it. (not complaining I love you guys just teasing)

Matthew Kennedy

Banger of an episode, gentlemen. Each of you firing on all cylinders.

RJ Cunningham

This is such a pig-headed response. The original commenter is objectively correct

Jeffrey LeMeowski

Love Collin Farrell as Penguin. The only alternative better casting I can think of would be difficult. Gandolfini would have crushed it.

Emil Svensson

Problem is, the Penguin was never supposed to be towering. In most instances not even imposing. Farrell is 5'10", Pattinson 6'1" or a hair under, and JCL is 6'3".

Emil Svensson

My take is that while the Nolan films are (lower case) great films, they can never be great Batman films, because Gotham is a complete non-entity.

Tristan

Jeremy Irons was the best Alfred for technology. But probably the worst butler for cleaning. Can't imagine him doing a good job dusting or polishing silver. Paul Dano is a gritty take on riddler. But not a great yeller or cerebral. I think Thor Love and Thunder Thor could beat him in a chess match.

Timothy Moore

Amazing film. I agree that the score may just be the best Batman score of all time. Anybody with a good sound system needs to crank it during the bat mobile reveal/chase. The sound design in the scene will blow your asshole off.

AlsoNamedB0rt

Um… true. I wasn’t seriously suggesting a new villain character…. what else could I have meant? 🤔

AlsoNamedB0rt

I tried. I got 2 minutes in. Joking about this movie, fun. Talking seriously about it, ok sure. Talking seriously while beating that dead horse of “Marvel is too big. CGI sucks. big studios bad. They should go back to making the movies we didn’t like at the time,” annoying. Doing only that while taking turns tongue bathing Matt Reeves’ taint….

Steven sadauskas

Everyone liked this when it came out and it's objectively a more well made movie than anything in the MCU. They enjoyed the movie, are they supposed to act like they didn't? Chill out dude lol

Eric Macneil

Do you think you guys talked about "jerking off" enough in this one?

Ashley Maycock

Watched it in IMAX opening week and when the batmobile started up my jaw was on the floor! Incredible sound design. Rewatched it in 4k yesterday and still absolutely love it.

Wil Brown

I fell asleep watching this movie in IMAX. In Ulaanbaatar Mongolia.

Zora McBride

Ho-lly, shit! My girlfriend and I just watched this for the first time and, ... wow! Five stars and five more! It hits on all levels--incredibly well written, a visual/cinematographic feast, excellent acting and character work, pacing so phenomenal that it feels like half its runtime. We're about to jump into the WLM--tall glass of water on hand for me. Love you guys, thanks for being one of the best pods out there. Get set to wear the blue!

Shariq

The face Pattinson makes when Paul Dani yells “Bruce Wayne!” was so great.

Shariq

Why are so triggered about other people sharing their opinion on the movie? What do get out silencing this opinion?

Fillmm

is there a way to listen to this via apple's podcast app???
