Okay, folks, so it's looking to be a real uneasy week at the box office as far as total gross goes. We'll get to see what kind of legs Inside Out 2 has going into week two, but there aren't any other major releases happening this weekend that could possibly give it a run for its money, no matter what percentage IO2 falls this weekend.

With that in mind, let's turn our attention to this summer's art market/general audiences crossover release, Jeff Nichols' The Bikeriders. Yes, at long last, the Tom Hardy/Austin Butler/Jodie Comer biker flick is seeing release after another abrupt, strike-related delay, and then 20th Century Studios off-loading the picture to Universal's art arm, Focus Features.

It's been a rough-AF year for Focus Features, after releasing a string of flops that includes Lisa Frankenstein, Drive-Away Dolls, The American Society of Magical Negroes, and, yikes, Back to Black.

So here they are with a biker movie (when was the last decent biker flick, btw?) starring three decently big names with the Hardy/Butler/Comer trifecta. But what will this movie actually pull? Well, certainly not Inside Out 2 numbers, but it's a title for adults that's not horror (a mostly cursed genre this year so far) that's also not a CGI monstrosity. Could light touching things in a movie get folks out for this one? What do you think?

Vote below and we'll loop back on Monday's On-Screen Live!

Have a great weekend, y'all, watch good stuff! - Andrew

My biggest obsession in life is Motorcycles, but I still can't see this being a hit with the general public

I'm really bad at guessing these things...but having seen the movie for an AMC unseen, I think it may do moderately well. It's a well made movie and the story kept me interested (as someone who doesn't care for motorcycles or the 60s really). Great performances by hardy, butler and jodie. We get a small role appearance from a certain motorcycle loving TWD alumni

I was very excited for this movie last year, and then the delay happened and I'm no longer that excited. I imagine a lot of people are likely the same way if they don't think the movie already came out because the ad campaign for it was already swinging when they decided to shelve it. I went with the lowest figure. I also think IO2 drops by 60%+ and the box office boomers will return

I'm seeing The Bikeriders on Sat and I'm super-stoked, as I love everyone involved, but somehow I don't see it doing huge business. :( Unless a desperation for air conditioning drives everyone to the theater, in which case, hooray! Global warming's good for something after all! (I'll be double-featuring with Ghostlight or Thelma in part for that reason.)

The Bikeriders just sounds like an old black and white exploitation flick that MST3K would have lampooned in their early days.

Brandon Shrader

I had a small interest in this movie and now that there's a trailer for Robert Eggers Nosferatu attached to it I'm more interested in buying a ticket.

As much as I would love to see a movie like this be a sleeper hit, I have seen zero advertising for it, I had to look up if it was even playing in my city and it is in multiple theaters I have been at in the past three weeks and none of them even had posters up of it coming soon. On top of that Jeff Nichols makes some good movies but none of been hits and while it has stars, it doesn't have anyone that has proven they have a fan base that shows up no matter, so unless Timothee Chalamet has an uncredited cameo or Universal quietly made this a Hulk movie for the third act I don't see it doing any major money though it looks good as an actual movie

Ben Brown

It ran as a mystery movie Monday and there were walkouts. It’s…. Fine. Everyone is good, but it never lives up to its cast.

JK

Seeing it Sunday, love Jeff Nichols and I really really hope it does well but I feel like this is gonna bomb...hope I'm wrong!

Alex Miraski

I kind of loathe motorcycles in real life, but this actually piques my interest. Could be because of the period setting. May go this weekend if it I can find a showing that works for me.

Mike

This one feel too late, like this would have been peak boomer nostalgia movie 40 to 30 years ago

The Nosferatu trailer being attached to The Bikeriders will draw some folks in

I am guessing the heatwave brings more people into this movie this weekend than would normally see it. One of our local theaters is doing “Beat the Heat” screenings, free to the public. Not sure if that counts towards this films box office Still guessing between $8 to $12 million.

Busiris

I can't say I'm even remotely interested in The Bikeriders and I didn't see a ton of marketing so I'll predict that it won't really perform well and most people are still out there seeing Bad Boys, Inside Out 2, or any other release from the past few weeks.

Isaac Coleman

They're trying to sell this movie mostly on the star power of Austin Butler. That isn't something you can do with *any* star anymore (people thought Tom Cruise was the last exception but last year showed that isn't true imo), but I think Butler in particular is poorly positioned for it - he has had two major roles which, while good and in successful movies, were also so transformational that he's unrecognizable. Is any normal moviegoer going to look at him in this and go "oh yeah, that's Feyd-Rautha?"

Derrick Affolder

I'm guessing the top level just send good vibes out for it. I want it to succeed. I saw it Monday at a "secret movie" screening and really loved it. No one walked out of the mostly sold put screening I was at, so hopefully word of mouth will drum up some business. I saw a ton of advertising for the initial release but none for this one, so I'm probably wrong on my guess. It isn't structured like a traditional movie, more of a character study about 2 points in time. Hardy, Butler and Comer deliver dynamite performances plus we get just a bit of Michael Shannon and he's fucking wonderful. It'll probably do mid-level numbers but, again, I'm going with $12mil+ just to send out positive vibes.

Neil Hunkins

I'm thinking it meets its projection only because of the heatwave going on this weekend.

LOVE Jeff Nichols. Bikeriders sounds like Goodfellas with bikers and I’m here for that.

Paul

The Bikeriders is currently on my Top Ten Best Films of 2024–BUT it’s hanging on by its fingertips. Once I see “Kinds of Kindness” next week, I’m afraid it’ll get pushed out of the list. We’ll see.

Justin Genova

WOAH! That’s a nice motorcycle!

Excitemike 64

Credit to whomever adapted a photo book into such a compelling film. Can’t help but wonder if a grainy black & white cut would elevate it even further.

Excitemike 64

It kind of is. It’s also an inversion of the biker scene from “A Bronx Tale”.

Excitemike 64

Most of the bikes in this (including that one) are custom Panhead-era Harleys (1948-1965). A nice detail considering the characters are mostly older dudes. The movie is set in the Shovelhead era (1966-1984) but old school HD devotees famously hate change.

Justin Genova

Hey man, that’s pretty cool. I was just thinking about Tim Robinson’s character in that ITYSL skit, and how funny it would be to see him rolling with Tom Hardy’s character in this.

Frank Grimes

looks like its doing 9M

Kate G

My friend Megan did the makeup for this one!! I’m stoked to see it strictly for that lol

I totally biffed on mentioning the poll on this week's OSL, but congrats to all the folks who voted that the film would come in somewhere in its forecasted gross! The movie wound up pulling a respectable $10M in its first weekend. The folks at the Focus Features offices are happy this morning! Thanks to everyone who voted in this one. The polls will return in a couple weeks in time for OSL to return on 7/15! - Andrew
