On this edition of our cartoon recap show, we're talking about the not-great animated adaptation of Men in Black! Is this more based on the comics or the movie? Is it both? Why do none of the vocal performances carry any amount of gravitas whatsoever? The episode in question, "The Long Goodbye Syndrome," originally aired on October 11, 1997, and re-watching it, we were instantly reminded of the abysmal theme song they stuck the show with. To go from Will Smith's intergalactic ear worm to this instrumental nothing tune was a real let down. Also, how horny did Agent L need to be for this kids' cartoon? PLUS: Is there a secret underground ring of DoorDash drivers sharing feet pics they "accidentally" take while confirming a drop-off? We discuss at length!

The first time I ever saw this show was when it premiered as part of a two hour primetime block on the WB, which also included the animated Batman/Superman crossover movie. In Season 2, K's voice actor twanged him up to make his performance more in keeping with Tommy Lee Jones. I found this episode a little too piloty and dull. I think the showrunners were trying to have their cake and eat it too, with the show adapting both the movie AND the comic. I guess they didn't want to ape the movie TOO much, what with the opening theme. BTW you can hear a instrumental version of Will Smith's "Men In Black" song over the end credits.

I don't mind telling you I watched the shit out of this show!

Kind of surprised how much the guys didn't care for this, I really liked that Kids WB block the year it released in 1997 when they were showing multiple episodes of Batman and Animaniacs, so I remember it being fine? Maybe it doesn't hold up, or maybe the guys were just in a negative mood on this one.

Mark Ibarra

Great job. This episode has convinced me to watch The Long Goodbye this weekend.

Hear out here, the series does get better. It kicks into high gear when we meet Alpha, K's old partner who mutates himself with alien DNA. Liam Neeson's character in MiB International is a poor man's take on Alpha.

This show and Big guy and Rusty the Boy Robot (incidentally animated by the same people, I believe) definitely had the same thing going on in regards to a slow start but great cruising speed. Though, I think what didn't help either was shows like these coming out right as kids cartoons could get a little edgier, but there was still no such thing as adult swim yet to let them get crazier

Maybe our mood was just that we'd watched a rather dull episode of a TV show? I mean, I've heard from several people that the series gets better, but as we did the pilot, I think it's safe to say it's a pretty weak start is all. - Andrew

Have you guys ever considered the occasional review of a good animated movie/episode as part of the Animation Damnation series? Maybe call it “Animation Salvation,” hmm?

wehatemovies

There are plenty of those AD episodes where we've liked the cartoon or animated film. I dug that Apes cartoon so much I watched all 13 episodes of it. I seem to also remember recent-ish eps like Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, the South Park Korn episode, Gargoyles, The Nightmare Before Christmas and so on... so there are definitely positive episodes in the mix! - Andrew

Chris Dobson

Yeah I think WB fully pivoted to promoting Pokemon by a couple of years into the show.

Joe Gunch

Here comes the Steve Sajdak - The X-Men 2 Defender

Frank Grimes

I loved this series lol. Alpha was so cool. I loved whenever he came back, more alien than ever.

Frank Grimes

One of my fave shows on kids WB. Had some great series long arcs, especially with alpha. If MIB: International had adapted some of the alpha storyline, I think I would've liked it more

Shariq

I didnt realized that they made a MIB cartoon. I was way too old for this when it came out.

Shariq

MIB International is a stay tuned. 😂😂

Eren Keskin

This show had an episode about something flying into the World Trade Center before 9/11 happened.

Having read the original MIB comics from Malibu, can confirm the series takes everything from the movies, and almost nothing from the comics. They're hunting werewolves with shotguns, and other supernatural shit, it's a lot closer to X-Files. It was also a lot more violent, the slime aspect in the films and series being a kid-friendly stand-in for the comic gore.

Funnily enough, I actually recently stumbled across a couple of episodes of this show on YouTube and watched them out of pure nostalgia. Yeah, it's clearly drawing from the movies, even though it's possibly taking place in it's own alternate timeline; agents J, K, L and Zed resemble but do not exactly match their movie counterparts. A number of the same aliens from the movies also appear (the giant evil cockroaches, for example), and an instrumental version of the Will Smith song plays over the end credits...

I have joined your Patreon love your content am from the UK.

Oh! That Guy.

And of course the amazing Batman Animated Series and a Simpsons Treehouse of horror. I love that the WLM month extends to the AD.

Swan Benson

Always thought the theme song was odd. But what I found more odd is the end credits play the instrumental version of the theme song from the movie.

Lar

The only episode of this show I remember distinctly was one about some sort of pig aliens and I remember it because I watched it on a screen in the Mall of America Planet Hollywood. Which to be honest is one of the most 90s things I could have said.

Kureigu

The one thing I remember about this cartoon is that it had the same animation style as extreme ghostbusters . Weird not remembering any episodes though I'm sure I watched it every week.

Boston Roberts

I'm a fan of the series, I think it plays with some interesting ideas. Also, episode five ends with J being sexually assaulted by a horny gleep glop which is played for laughs. It's an odd show

Mark D Myers

A thousand times yes to a episode about the clerks cartoon!
