"Between the hair and the sleeveless [shirts]... is he living on the beach?" - Andrew on Magneto

On the first official episode of this inaugural season of Too Old for This Shit, we're kicking things off talking about the first two episodes of the all-new Marvel cartoon, X-Men '97! The two episodes discussed here are episode one, "To Me, My X-Men," and episode two, "Mutant Liberation Begins."

How fantastic does all the animation look? Why do they still have Jean Grey fainting every chance she gets? How great is it that Cyclops is cool now? Why can't Wolverine drive to the hospital normally? Is this Magneto's sexiest haircut? Should the show drop in some period-appropriate pop music? And how many C.H.U.D.s are gonna get pissed off at this cartoon because they've been watching and reading X-Men wrong this whole time? PLUS: Who wouldn't want Sexy Breakfast with Gambit?

This first series of Too Old for This Shit is going to cover the first season of the all-new Disney+ show, X-Men ’97. The full release schedule is available on our website.

Loved it but they probably should have recast everyone in my opinion. Rogue sounded more roadside diner waitress than southern belle and I was never a fan of the wolverine voice. I got to X-men nerd out so that was cool. Storm’s hair was direct foreshadowing to her losing her powers. Back to Mom’s basement till next week.

In the comics the way they swung Magneto's age leaned upon an earlier storyline where Magneto creates another villain called Alpha, who then de-ages Magneto until he's a baby (I think he also does this to Mastermind and some of the other Brotherhood of Evil Mutants). When Magneto is re-aged, the way Chris Claremont presented it was that he was re-aged younger and more vital. He kept his white hair as both a baby and a middle-aged guy later on. Incidentally, in the "trial of Magneto" comic storyline, this is how they mount a defense of Magneto which gets by the fact that he was a terrorist and held everyone hostage with nukes, arguing that the Magneto who did all of those crimes was no more, and that the re-aged Magneto was in effect a different person. And because it's comics, Magneto was defended by Gabrielle Haller, the concentration camp survivor Magneto and Charles Xavier rescued from Baron Strucker, who Professor X had an affair with while she was his patient recovering from trauma (yikes!). She earlier gave birth to Xavier's son, Legion. I never watched the original series of cartoons, so as someone who knew the X-men from the comics, there was a lot of cognitive dissonance. That began when they announced Henry Gyrich had killed Professor X. I kind of couldn't believe it? That's not quite the way the Gyrich of the comics would play it. He wasn't an out-and-out bigot, more of an officious, reactionary Defense Dept. guy. Also, I kept wondering if Morph turning into the other X-men meant we weren't going to see those X-men in future episodes. Thank you for a cool set of episodes! These are really fun to listen to, and they deepen my appreciation for the show.
