Return to Ethereal Gaming (Patreon)
Content
Sometimes I think back to my early videos and wonder when things changed from being fun to feeling like an obligation.
"Egee" comes from EG which originally meant Ethereal Gaming (cringe) but now Egee just means Egee as in the OC.
The earliest videos on the channel were mostly me futzing around with hardware stuff and an occasional gaming review or "How-To" style of video. I made them because I enjoyed making videos.
I started focusing on Linux-first content sometime in 2016. I did a series of videos on Steam Machines and started talking more about Open Source stuff in general. It was going well!
But... Things took a bad turn at the very start of 2018 with this set of videos:
I wanted to start 2018 out with a bang but I was totally unprepared for this overwhelming negative backlash. And some of the comments were scathing, like this one:
To YouTube's credit, the comment filter has gotten a lot better and I haven't seen a comment like this in quite some time.
I think I really messed up focusing too much on the Linux crowd. It brought in an audience that subscribed to my content not because they enjoyed it, but because they hated it. And later in 2018, I started using the Egee pfp which probably wasn't the best idea (at least at that time).
This constant barrage of negativity made me feel like I needed to produce certain videos to make my audience happy which led to this video, which is my most popular video to date for the wrong reasons.
The OpenEgee channel made me realize that I really do enjoy making videos as a creative exercise. Those pre-Egee videos were very whimsical and kind of pointless but really fun to make.
Now, I have an audience of folks that are interested in basically whatever I produce so why not just go back to my roots?
Granted, my older videos have not aged well and haven't been spared from the dislikes of my detractors. I unlisted them because I consider 'em a bit too rough for public consumption. You find find them in the archived playlist though.
The video I am currently producing is much more like those early 2015/2016 era of experimental videos. There's even some live-action stuff in there just to mix things up and freak people out a bit.
I'm honestly expecting this video to do extremely poorly but that's okay. This is the first time where I am taking a risk at angering my Linux audience and maybe some of them will just unsubscribe and leave me alone.
The important thing is that this upcoming video has been really fun to produce and I'm very excited to share it with you guys.
