When I was in the midst of Distro Delves, I could tell I was beginning to cultivate an audience of toxic people. Not that everyone or even most people in the Linux community are toxic but let's be honest, the community has a problem.


I suspected that by doubling down on Linux content it would be more difficult for non-Linux content to gain traction. And by judging my latest non-Linux videos, I think I was right:

I don't put too much stock into YouTube's analytics anymore because they often don't match my expectations or reality in general. For example, where is that revenue coming from? Those videos aren't even monetized!

But even though some of those videos cost subscribers, the engagement for them is fantastic especially when compared to my Linux content like comparisons and Distro reviews.

For example, the Rocks n Diamonds video:

80% watch time from subscribers and just under 50% viewed is phenomenal!

So while fewer people find (thanks YouTube search algorithm!) and watch my videos, the people that do watch more of it.

If 600k people view a video but only a faction of them actually watch it, what's the point? That's the story with my most popular video:


I'm happy to see an exodus from the channel. The Linux typecast is a problem I created and I aim to fix it in 2021.

Intend to stick around to see what 2021 brings... Have you considered perhaps having Patreon subscribers as guests to provide the latest news and whatnot on their area of expertise?

That is an excellent suggestion! Once I dial in my audio setup and I'm more easily able to tune the audio levels on the fly, I'd love to do this!
