Awesome reaction, thanks for sharing! Just an FYI, there is also an English Dub version of this show on Hulu. It's not 100% in English, but those portions where all of the speakers and audience understand Japanese are dubbed into English. Some of the tones in speaking is lost in this dubbing, but it allows you to focus on the characters' faces and the scenery rather than reading subtitles. I love the Game of Thrones-ness of this, even among characters we want to trust, and the methods are so subtle. Noting the part when Blackthorne says he wants to "to vanquish our common enemies", which Mariko translates to "to enlist you against his enemies". And when Toranaga responds that Blackthorne should "abandon this war, you are outnumbered, there is no hope for you", Mariko translates "you should not war against the Portuguese and Japan, you are outnumbered, it is hopeless". I believe Mariko is not interested in the fight, but she doesn't want to believe the Portuguese/Catholics could be against Japan.

The series is very accurate in it's details of Japanese and European culture in 1600. The novel Shogun is based on the real historic figures of Tokugawa Ieyasu and William Adams the first Englishman to arrive in Japan. Some of the names from the novel and the original mini- series have been altered to more accurately reflect the naming conventions of that time period.
