The tonal whiplash is dead on from the game, it's all so well done. Also the songs that sound so 50s etc were all used in the games, and actually are all from the era. It's pretty amazing how some of the music from the Cold War that directly referenced nuclear explosions and some pretty dark things could sound so sugary cheerful. The show absolutely nails the game's themes and very mixed tones of super dark humor with corny weirdness, naivete with nihilism and quite a bit of over the top violence. They spend a lot of time on veneers of optimism over darker realities, and also good things/people that appear bad (often because they are 'different').

To add a bit more to what others have said about the timeline split and why the tech looks the way it does (especially why its so bulky)- the core change that split things from the real timeline in the 50s or so- microprocessors were never invented so all tech still relies on vacuum tubes making it much bulkier. With microprocessors failing, science ended up focusing on making fusion power work and the advances in robotics (based on vacuum tubes) like already mentioned. That all rippled out into changes in politics and what countries fought over, different resource shortages, and US culture stalled out in the hyper-patriotic height of American Exceptionalism.

The aesthetic vibe of Fallout in the games is so compelling and you can see how it gives such a strong support structure for the confident creative hands at work in the series. It's just really, really good.

So fun fact, in the games when you find the Vat-Boy it gives you boosts or perks! So Lucy getting 'inspired' by the posters n other such Vat-Boy merchandise is a direct link to what happens when you play the game. Its so wonderful how the writers wrote this show.
