If you needed a transport, why didnt you just get a Gustard U12? Its specifically designed to be what you want it to be. I'm not saying it would give you better sound quality but if you want to use something as a reviewers tool it has to be so good that it could be considered a reference, Then people cant bitch about your reviews not being accurate because you use a mica origen as a transport.

This is unrelated to the current review, but I noticed in the HPV-1 review you mentioned that you purchased the Little Bear B4 for review and I was wondering if you've given it a listen yet. I was looking at it for a cheap tube solution but I don't really buy anything that isn't Zeos approved.

Is there any signal degradation with the fiber optical splitter? I realize that its just light so you don't have to worry about the impact of parallel and series splits on voltage or impedance, but rarely do you get anything for free in the world of electronics, so I was just wondering if there is a sacrifice for the split.

A tiny bit unrelated, and it's possible you've answered it elsewhere, but would you say an amp is worth it no matter what headphones you have? I have the ATH A900X (the AD900X's closed brother,) and while there isn't a *ton* of solid information on it, I've seen a lot of people say that an amp isn't necessary at all, but I think I remember you saying something about amps helping to some extent on almost everything. I'm a bit bored with my headphones, and am kind of caught between wanting to get an amp and wanting to get a new set of cans.

Can't you do the same thing with the Behringer UCA202 for $29? What am I missing here?

You can. Well I can. But the UCA202 has a shittier dac that only accepts 16 bit 48khz. And a joke headphone amp.

mine just arrived today. set up on a Mac (no issue on usb or optical). i have a set of edifier powered speakers on my desk and have switched between the SHPs and MP retros and threw in the bose QC25 (back when i thought those were good) and ran my test of Pink Floyd FLAC files at everything. the sound is cleaner with a little more width over stock sound output from the Mac. i wonder though if it is me or does the high gain reduce some of the width? this has become a must have on my desk.

Not in any of my testing? The bose might be doing weird things but the SHP and Retro's should be fine.
