I actually agree with Wesley- the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or one, Spock, Wrath of Kahn. That said, they got lucky Willow was able to bring back something.

They set up the pencil thing quite well. In 3x16 not only does Willow float a pencil, but we see she can embed it in a tree. And, in an earlier episode, we see Buffy kill a vamp with a pencil (while practicing a test in the graveyard with Giles). So they set up all the components of it.
