Cass, I've been watching your channel since you started and I'm thrilled you're jumping into the Buffyverse! It's a long haul but very worth it.

I'm glad you have a mod as the Buffyverse is world famous for spoilers. Has Your mom seen the show, because if she hasn't there are some spoilers that could slip through unnoticed by her. Also we have all watched this show many times and also with many reactors, so including the video and audio is not taking any views away from any large corporations, they will all do just fine. By including the audio and video you become an active part of the Buffyverse and help it to spread which will encourage many more views well into the future as each generation discovers this show and you can be a part of that.👍

She has seen it! My sister is gonna help out with moderating too! And to me, yes it is taking away playbacks for Buffy. I like to follow copyright laws. All these rewatches from Buffy fans are huge for the show’s numbers! :) But yeah, it just comes down to me deciding to follow the law haha

Cute pup! The visual reference cues worked nicely.

Eric Balfor (Jesse) went on to do so many shows and TV movies it is incredible. He was a regular co star on the excellent scifi series Haven for years. The difference in his personality before and after turning was dramatic and very well done. The idea that the vampire is the same person but basically turned into a psychopathic killer with super strength and no remorse is truly horrific if you think about it. Brian Thompson "Luke" was excellent in the first two episodes, eating up his boss vampire role. He was very experienced in playing a vampire in other shows and playing tough guys in movies like Terminator and Cobra. His most famous role was as an alien bounty hunter menacing Mulder and Scully in The X-Files. Xander got some really good emotional scenes with Jesse in this episode, you could feel him not being ready to say goodbye, not ready to actually kill his friend, even though he could see it was over.

With the copyright law, there is a huge irony here and I've brought this up with other creators. you show more clips on YouTube than on patreon. And YouTube, is 100x more strict on copyright law than on patreon. It blows my mind!! I mean what if you react to a movie that a person who's watching doesn't have it, they're fucked. lets say they want to watch you react to the new avatar movie, a movie that's over 3 hrs long but don't have a movie. Isn't this a website where you get a full reaction? yet they have to go over to YouTube where they can only get a 30 minute reaction. See the problem: they can't see or hear what you're reacting to. and I always thought this website was for that!!! so, if you're not gonna show what you're reacting then never watch a show or movie outside of Netflix, Hulu or Disney+ , bc the majority of ppl have those sites and can follow along. bc if you do it's pointless to subscribe on YouTube for free.

grapevinecinema

Yep, copyright is a weird one! Over on youtube there are rules and copyright claims and sometimes if i include too much of the episode in a video or too long of a clip, the money goes to the show’s production company.

grapevinecinema

But also that’s a good point. I’m going to have to limit the shows I may provide full length reactions to going forward to ones that are available on Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max etc so that watch alongs are more attainable this way. Thanks for the advice!

Ryan Wilson

BTW: reaction videos are videos commenting on a tv show or a movie, right? I had a little fun and look up copyright law bc every creator on this damn website is doing what you are doing and it's pissing me off. you say on YouTube, and if you like this video go to my patreon page and watch my full reaction there. But we can't watch it, bc there's nothing to watch. not only that but we have to pay to watch nothing. you guys are scamming the hell out of us and you guys blame copyright law for that. But, Reaction videos are just your comments on a tv show and/or movie. I say this bc under section 107 states: Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 106 and 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. So you can use it. and if you don't believe me here's the link: https://www.copyright.gov/title17/92chap1.html#107

Hi Ryan. I have refunded your patreon pledge to me. It sucks that my integrity is coming into question when I'm only trying to follow my own moral compass here. I do have it listed in the description of the tiers that I provide a timer and audio/visual queues for you guys to line up with your own stream of the show so that people know what they are signing up for. I'll take your advice and go ahead and include this verbiage when I mention my Patreon on my videos as well. As far as the copyright link -- if you continue to read what is allowed under fair use, it does have conditions, one of them being the following:'the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole' - there's far too much down time in my reactions for me to confidently say I'm using fair use and there is a reason we are not able to post full episodes on our channels. Also, the reason us reactors get come down on so hard by distribution companies over on YouTube can be for something as small as allowing a clip to play for too long without enough comment on its portion. I wish it wasn't so, but after my own research -- this is how it is going to be and I do wish you the best.

Ryan Wilson

If you want to talk about integrity don't show clips on one website, yet no clips on another. So, if you're gonna show clips on YouTube show clips on here. But if you're not gonna show clips on here don't show clips on YouTube(double standards never look good). and up front when you edit a YouTube video when you do you're patreon bit, add something: I can't show any of the tv/movie on it so to HAVE MY FULL REACTION you'll have to have the show or movie to follow along. that way ppl will know up front what they are buying into.

Negative

Welcome to the Buffyverse. You're going to enjoy this ride. Don't worry about the random complainers (who are a very small minority) about how you choose to provide your content. Whatever is most comfortable for you is best. I am on board with you all the way. I love how you take notes. Your reactions to the Godfather movies a while back were some of my favorites. Looking forward to many seasons of Buffy

Shandler

Don’t worry about the occasional negativity- the Buffyverse fandom is generally some of the kindest, most thoughtful and compassionate people you’ll meet. On the vampire point, upon dying the person is inhabited by a soulless demon. This demon retains the memories of the person they killed and sometimes even, to varying degrees, aspects of their victim’s personality.

I just wanted to welcome you among all of the viewers who gone on the same journey that you just begun, and what a journey it will be. You would have liked to be able to watch it when it come out, but I actually envy you for not doing it so you are now able to experience the show for the first time. I would love to feel the same sense of surprise, the tension, the excitement and the emotions that I felt the first time I watched Buffy, but this is obviously impossible. Also, you haven't had the enjoyment of all subsequent shows of this genre spoilt by the comparison to BTVS. After Buffy, I was looking forward to watch another show, of the same genre, able to give me the same emotions but always felt so dull, or uninspired, or boring, or even dumb. This is just me personally of course, I'm sure that there are a lot of people who liked shows like, I don't know, “Vampire Diaries” as much as Buffy, if not more. To conclude, put away the notebook, you won't need it … really, and let yourself be absorbed by the world, the characters and the acting of this amazing cast, all the emotions and feelings, in short, enjoy the journey because, after all, you can experience this show for the first time only once. Just a couple of fun/interesting facts to conclude... 1- The first season it's unique in the series for what concern the production. It was shoot, re-shoot, adjusted, polished, and completely edited, way before the first episode aired. Starting from the second season instead, the production turned back in what was a more conventional format for the shows in the '90. 2- Despite their young age; SMG was between 18 and 19 at the time of filming, and Alyson Hannigan was only a year older, both had already quite a career under their belts having started acting very young. This means that, with a quick google search, it's easy to find out how they would have looked like if they played their roles at 16 like the characters. This is not the case for Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia) who played her first role when she was already 19, she is also the older one in the cast (the young part of the cast at least). 3- If you're interested in seeing how the casting choices can make or break a show like this, search “Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Unaired Pilot 1996” on youtube. It's a test shoot for the pilot when they didn't have the full cast yet. 4- (Because you have just seen The Last of Us) Among the many, now, well known actors and actress who played some minor role in the show, there is also Pedro Pascal in what was one of his first role in his career. I dare you to recognize him, he was soooo young.

Enjoyed your thoughtful insights about GoT (book and show) ages ago, and I think you'll really like the depth of the writing for Buffy. So many amazing themes and arcs. One small caveat I'd add to the comments about vampires: A big percentage of fandom is very insistent about one particular interpretation of the nature of vampires, based largely on things said in this episode. A smaller but passionate percentage thinks it's not quite so simple, based on nuances and layers in the writing. I always kind of wish both camps would hold back and let new reactors speculate and wonder and theorize about it at this early stage. Seeing the show again through fresh eyes, as a brand new unfolding story, is what makes reactions so fun. But sometimes we can't help ourselves when it comes to sharing fan dogma and show lore. Hope you'll take all our comments with a grain of salt and let the great writing speak for itself. Can't wait to see what you make of the show!

Marith Lizard

It is frustrating to not be able to see/hear the video, but I get it, and unfortunately it may be the safest option as well as the most ethical. I've heard that the copyright holder of some popular anime just started a very aggressive crackdown and they're pursuing even reactions behind Patreon paywalls and links privately shared in discords. (There are a few creators out there who are just fine with full reactions (Rooster Teeth and Vivziepop come to mind) and hopefully if you ever check their stuff out you'll take advantage of that. Even the audio makes it much easier to enjoy a reaction.)
