And here is the new discussion threat for my SW crossovers.  If you have something fic specific to ask or to suggest, simply start your post by putting HORSE or MAGIC at the beginning.

The reason I am not splitting these two stories up is that my questions here have nothing to do with the specific stories, and everything to do with SW.

1.  I am really having trouble with history and technology in the SW world.  How much of the universe's history is actually known by most people?  I mean, I know no one knows about the history before the Jedi Order, but how many people know about the first world where the Jed'ai gathered?  How about those Force Gates?  I mean, there is so much lore, but how much of it is actually known?  I get the impression that most of that has been lost in cycles of warfare, and just want to know if that's just me.

2. Connected to that is technology: I read once that tech was actually becoming cruder and less advanced over time.  But I don't see how that could be - the Death Star, the X-wing versus the Sprite, so... is it nonmilitary stuff thatis just not advancing?  I know for a fact their soft sciences - psychology and medicine have not evolved.

3. I know that SW have ship size classifications.  I also know they are... inconsistent.  A cruiser sized vessel called a dreadnought for example.  So would anyone think it too irritating if I started my own classification system?

4.Tied into the above, can anyone explain why capital ships don't mount bigger weapons than smaller ships?  In anti-air operations you want a lot of guns sure, but in capital ship to capital ship engagements you need to really nudge your opponent, so... why not scale up say a quarter of your weapons to four times their normal size, stick 'em on turrets, and have those as your main offensive punch?

4) I think a big reason for the lack of large weapons is to do with many tiny lasers look cooler in a movie setting especially if it’s from a fighters perspective. In the burning/stinking mess that is the new movies large ships played a more main role in part of it so we saw big weapons and the use of exclusive bomber ships. 3) Also I know some may prefer if you used canon classification for ships, but it may help with sizing if you started to use your own universal ship classifications so I’m laying my own vote for that.

3) If you can make it work, go for it. But, I believe the reason behind smaller ships given large classification is that ship design enlarged over time but the classification stayed the same in terms of name if not necessarily size... so a "Dreadnought" from 577BBY would probably be considered a "Cruiser" by 25BBY. More often than not, a Dreadnought is the largest ship and capable of taking on a fleet alone (ie. Super Star Destroyer). However, Capitol ships come in similar sizes but different variants (Venator, Acclimator, etc.) and for rhe SW universe either Assualt Carriers (Fighters and Bombers), Troop Transport (Ground Troops and Equipment) or Flagships (Command Staff and Elite Space/Ground Units). Cruisers (by US Navy standards) are the next largest ships. Below Capitol ships in size, but still able to hold against them until able to escape or reinforcements arrive. Cruisers have many variants including Electronic Warfare, Troop Transport, Mine Sweepers, and Elite Unit Transport. Frigates are next, and while smaller than cruisers are just as deadly. Normally they are weapons platforms (Missile, Torpedo, Anti-Air, etc.) though they could also coordinate SAR operations. Probably on par with the size of the Tantive IV... maybe) Destroyers are the smallest Naval Ships. These focus on quick strikes and fast escape. These are Capitol Ship killers. And in my opinion should be about the size of the standard "Consular 'Cruiser'"... but I guess with fighters and bombers they would be obsolete. I think what you're really asking, is where are the Battleship Variants of the Capitol Ships? Where is the Capitol Ship that is purpose built to take on other Capitol Ships? Again, I think fighters and bombers have made them the more expensive option.... that no one wants to take.
