Panel 1

An overview of a golden age movie studio backlot. The 1920s. We can see the open outdoor backlot stage of Arabian Nights.

TEXT BOX:

WHEN: The Golden Age of Cinema.

WHERE: The backlot of CARTER FILM STUDIOS.

VOICE OVER: What do you mean I’ve been recast?

Panel 2

We meet YOUNG DEBORAH, who is average of looks and features. She is arguing with a STAGE MANAGER who holds a list and clipboard and won’t let her into the ARABIAN PALACE set. Her clothes are tight on stick-thin body.

DEBORAH: I had a...private casting meeting with Mr. Bill Carter, the producer, who arranged for me to play Scheherazade for his Arabian Nights film.

STAGE MANAGER: Well, ma’am, that could explain it, because Bill Carter isn’t producing anymore, the film’s been handed off to his brother, George.

DEBORAH: WHAT? Why would he do that?

VOICE OFF PANEL: Because, dear Deborah, I had my own private session with Billy and Georgie…

Panel 3

We meet PHERA FELLONI, a striking and beautiful movie star who puts all of Deborah’s looks to shame. She carries a lit cigarette on a long filter.

DEBORAH: Phera!

PHERA: And I showed them some arrangements they much preferred over what you offered.
