character questionnaire: Tobias Amadeus (Patreon)

How does your character feel about personal space?  Do they tend to make others uncomfortable with how close they get, or are they the ones continually being uncomfortable with anyone getting too close to them? Or do they not care either way?

Tobias is the type who would be hyper-aware of another in his personal space. I wouldn’t say that he’s necessarily guarded about it, but I see him being very situationally aware of touch/feeling crowded. It does make him uncomfortable.

What is your character’s dream career?  Are they actively trying to pursue it, or is it just a wish/fantasy they have that they know can never come true?

Tobias has a heavy interest in becoming a teacher. He loves the idea of being a history teacher/admired his own history teacher. This will come up later.

Would your character have fun in an art museum?  Or would they be bugging their friends to leave the whole time?

I can actually see Tobias being very interested in an art museum.

If your character is in pain, do they let everyone around them know just how bad it is, or do they tend to try and cover it up and say they’re fine? Does this ever result in negative consequences, whether it’s people ignoring their complaints when they actually do have a bad injury, or their injury going untreated when they really do need help?

Emotionally: Tobias reminds me of a wounded animal when he’s hurt. He doesn’t ask for help, or maybe even acknowledge the fact that he needs help, he just lashes out.

Physically: It depends on the person. I don’t think he’s used to being babied when he’s physically hurt, so in the instance that Oliver bandaged up his wounds from his fight with Richard, he wasn’t sure how to react.

Does your character tend to make decisions based on instincts or “gut feelings,” or do they rely more on logic and careful consideration? Do they ever try to find a balance between the two?

Tobias tries very hard to be practical and logical about his decision making, and may have convinced himself he’s very careful, but he’s actually quite brash when he wants something.

Is your character easily creeped out by ghost stories, horror movies, scary images, etc.? If so, what kinds of stories scare them the most? Why?

Tobias hates horror. He thinks it’s cheesy. He also doesn’t care for violence/the blood and guts of it all. He does like to hear other people’s experiences with “hauntings” though. Ghost stories are fun to him.

Has your character ever had to overcome a big fear in order to complete an important task?  If so, what was the fear, and what did they have to do to overcome it?  If not, have they ever failed at a task because of a fear?

Fear is basically Tobias’ character arc in Black Velvet. He’s still overcoming the things he’s afraid of.

Describe how your character deals with failed or failing relationships, whether familial, platonic, romantic, sexual or otherwise.  Do they easily let go of people, or are they more likely to hold onto a relationship for as long as they can? Does this affect how they form relationships?

Tobias is the type to cling hard to the relationships he has, familial, platonic — and especially romantic, all while convincing himself he doesn’t deserve to hold on.

Is your character gullible, or do they tend to be more skeptical? If they’re gullible, do people ever take advantage of them for it? And if they’re skeptical, is it hard for others to convince them of things that are actually true?

Tobias is extremely skeptical and doesn’t allow himself to trust enough to be taken advantage of, though he does have a period of time where he’s gullible towards his mother.

If your character emptied the contents of their pockets/purse/backpack/etc., what would be inside? Do they often have a lot of stuff on them from day to day, or are they light packers?

For some reason I see Tobias as a gum chewer. I imagine him having a bunch of gum wrappers in his pockets.

The Ranger

Is your character generally the first to make a move if they have a crush on someone, or do they wait for the other person to act first?

Tobias is the type to bottle it up until he snaps.

Describe your character’s sexual orientation.  Have they ever questioned this identity, whatever it maybe?  Is it a big part of their life, or something they don’t ever really think about?

It’s hard to define his sexual orientation because he’s so Oliver-centric. I’d say gay. But he’s really focused on Oliver. Of course, with having been raised in the church, he’s thought about it often.

Does your character have any scars?  If so, where are they located, and where did they come from?

Yes, recent ones from fighting, some from sports, and old from Richard.

How well does your character control their emotions?  Do they have a lot of breakdowns, or do they generally hold it together pretty well?

He had a better reign on them when he was younger. He’s much more explosive and fragile in his adulthood. He’s the king of turning any emotion into anger.

How does your character feel about children? Do they have any children of their own, much younger siblings, or other kids that they are close to?  If they don’t have kids, do they want ever to have any?

Tobias is an only child but he does like children. He’s not thought that far into it.

What would your character’s ideal birthday/holiday/etc.? present be?  Do they get shy when receiving gifts in front of people, or do they like it?

I feel like he would get uncomfortable accepting gifts 😂 the best thing to get him would be something thoughtful that coincides with his interests in books.

Can your character ride a horse (or camel, donkey, or any other comparable animal)? If so, is it something they often do? Is it a hobby or a necessary means of transportation for them?

Haha, no. I can’t imagine him riding a horse. He’d probably feel bad about it.

Does your character spend a lot of time on grooming, like shaving, makeup, hairstyling, etc.? Why or why not?

Not really. I just imagine he’s handsome regardless and aware of it 🥲

What’s the most valuable/expensive single item your character has ever owned?  Where did they get it?  Does it have any meaning to them beyond the monetary value?

I’d say his car, as Tobias isn’t wealthy, and no.

Who are the three people closest to your character? Are they friends? Family? 

Nic, really, and that’s it aside from his blooming friendship with Oliver.

Is your character the kind of person who takes (or would take) a lot of selfies? What about pictures of their friends?

I imagine his friends roping him into it.

Is your character more clumsy or graceful? Does this come from training they’ve done (ballet, sports, etc.), or is it natural?

I’d say he’s graceful. He’s rather tall and aware of his body. Haha

Does your character speak any languages other than their native tongue(s)?  If so, where did they learn it/them?  Do they use it regularly?

I imagine him knowing some Greek from his father, but very little.

Does your character have a large or small appetite?  Are they a picky eater or willing to try any dish once?

He is definitely not picky and has a large appetite.

Can your character play any instruments?  If so, when and how did they learn? Do they play just for fun, in a school group/club, in a band, or for some other reason?

No, he was more into sports.

Where did your character’s name come from? Is it a family name? A random one their parents liked? Something they picked for themselves? Does it have any special meaning?

Actually I put no thought into picking the name Tobias, I just picked it. His middle name, Alexio, is his father’s middle name.

Does your character have any pets? If so, what? If not, do they want any?

No, I could see him happily caring for an animal. But he doesn’t have one and likely wouldn’t seek one out.

How does your character feel about authority figures? If the feeling is negative, do they act on that feeling?

He is not a fan of authority mostly because he hasn’t had pleasant experiences.

What’s the worst physical injury your character has ever suffered?  Does it still affect them today?

Emotionally.

How would your character react if someone broke into their house while they were home?

Oh gosh, I can’t see that going well 😂. Tobias is a very protective person.

Is your character generally a patient person? Are they patient with some people but can’t stand others?

Ahh, actually, opposite of what you might think, I see him as being really impatient in certain scenarios.
