My fellow bassists!

There's no doubt that Classical Thump is one of the craziest bass solos ever recorded. But it's actually not quite as difficult to play as it sounds.

Don't get me wrong it's definitely not "easy" but there's a lot of repetition and large chunks of the piece use the same three-note technical patterns, so once use master those, the whole piece becomes a lot easier.

One of the main technical patterns in the first part of Classical Thump is "down hammer up". If you can get the hang of this technique, it's just a matter of playing that pattern on different notes!

While you're learning Classical Thump I'd recommend practising this exercise: https://www.patreon.com/posts/88-1-classical-1-96311986 as well as this one: https://www.patreon.com/posts/54-advanced-slap-82911213

As always, let me know if you have any questions or comments and I'll make sure to answer ASAP!

Thanks so much for coming here and practising with me, have a great day and I'll see you in the next lesson!

hey Charles I just wanted to ask how many years of playing did it take you to ba able to play this piece for the first time at full speed?

Charles Berthoud

I learned this song after about 10 years of playing bass. But if someone had told me about double-thumbing earlier, I probably could've learned it earlier

Alison Rendell

hi Charles Berthoud ,I was just wandering how you do the double thumping so well as when I tried my thumb kept on hitting the rong string. btw I thing you play it tighter than victor wooten himself

Charles Berthoud

I had the same problem when I first started. Tomorrow I will be releasing a new double-thumb lesson that is less crazy and will allow you to put all your focus into hitting the right string!
