wow, season 1 just flew by huh. It feel like yesterday we were still following our favorite monk child/hero. I love how both of y'all gasped at the same exact time when they showed the airbenders tied up 😭😭😭😭. The boat scene was really dark 😔😔.

My headcanon for how Amon took away people's bending was that he traveled the world searching for that power and learned chi blocking. He then uses his blood bending to pinch some chakras related to that bending (kind of how Aang had his chakra locked when he left his training with the Guru in ATLA) and he virtually achieves the same thing.

How amon's "take away bending" thing works: Do you remember Ty Lee how she was able to temporarily block the chi of other benders, so he does exactly the same thing with the difference from Ty Lee he doesn't block chi from the outside but from the inside of the victim with bloodbending. Well, thanks to that, the body can't regenerate itself and restore bending because it doesn't know what actually happened to it. So the affected thinks it has lost bending forever. I hope this short explanation makes sense

I’ll never forgive Nickelodeon for dropping the ball on this IP. Brian and Michael (the creators) were given creative freedom a few years back when the the original series took Netflix by storm. They direct Avatar Studios within Nick. Hopefully more good things to come. To cap off Nickelodeon’s original fumble (and to celebrate your journey), it’s time you watch the movie . . . 😏

Regarding the hows of bending, each type of bending has potentially multiple special abilities that are never fully explained. Think Sparky Sparky Boom man (combustion) , metal bending, healing, lightning generation, etc. It is enough for me that he was so powerful and special he unlocked that ability, like Toph unlocked metal bending. But I can also get behind the theory that it is like Ty Lee did physical chi blocking and Amon did used blood to internally block chi. The reason Korra didn't loose air bending is because she didn't have it yet. After she lost all her other bendings she finally unlocked the ability to do air bending.

Great reaction! thoroughly enjoyed it and your commentary. I'm a big fan of Korra, but I thought you raised excellent points on the pacing and having 1 Season versus 3 to work with (and less episodes per season). OTOH, every episode of Korra is pretty full on and focussed, whereas ATLA had a few filler episodes, especially in S1. Lots of people have covered the possibility of blood bending replicating chi blocking strikes, so I won't go into that. I would suggest the reason Korra's air bending wasn't blocked was because it wasn't "activated" when Amon blocked Korra.

On a darker note, a popular fan theory about the end of season 1, and I can totally see and accept it, is that the writers were writing a suicide ideation scene for Korra at the cliff. Her identity was that of being the avatar, and having her power stripped away also stripped away her identity. When Tenzin said it would be alright, she replied, " No, it's not." She tells Mako, " No. I mean go away, back to republic city. Get on with your life." Despair. Distancing herself from others. Going to a cliff and standing so close to the edge that her tear has room to clear it and fall down. The idea is the writers could never explicitly say it was suicide ideation on a kids show, but it was written that way. A possible internal thought could be "If I die, the next Avatar can be born with their full power and abilities. I am nothing now." It was that moment of raw suffering and possibly the acceptance that she wouldn't give up on life, that connected her to Aang. It is just a theory of course, but considering the murder/suicide that just happened, it is definitely not outside the realm of possibility.

Another heartbreaking detail they added in this episode is when Korra went up to the edge of the cliff and you can see the teardrop fall. The creators used this to emphasize how she thought about jumping. Korra’s identity has always been about her being the avatar. Since she didn’t have her bending or spiritual connection, she thought maybe the next avatar wouldn’t be as much of a failure she was.

SuddenImpulse

The creators actually did confirm this at one point. I will try and dig it up. I believe its not explicit simply because of the context of the show (Nickelodean etc.)

Spartan keeps underestimating how much electricity can hurt several times throughout the series he has commented in disappointment at how “easily” characters get taken down by electrocution. Just because they are benders doesn’t mean they are shock proof.

Reminder that nick didn't even properly air season 4

Leenis

I thought that too. I swear I read/heard it was confirmed, and I started off by saying that. After about a 15 minute search, I gave up and kept it on the theory side. I hope you can find that confirmation because I swear I saw it years ago.

Lots of people are not so keen on S2, though its still watchable. But based on what you've said you're looking forward to, I think you guys might quite enjoy it. Even if it falls a bit flat for you, its sets up S3 which is top tier amongst both series.

The final scene with Tarrlok and Noatak on the boat always gets to me so hard. The look of resignation and regret on Tarrlok's face. The way Noatak's voice almost breaks. The way the tears roll down his face just before the explosion. It's all so fucking moving. Asami is given one last bit of trauma this season when her own father tries to kill her in a rage. Thank goodness Team Avatar believes in the buddy system and Bolin was there to back her up. Asami went through a hell of a lot during the latter half of Book 1, but she stuck to her convictions to the bitter end, and I respect that. Korra finally manages to airbend in "Endgame", and this scene implies some interesting things about the root of Korra's airbending block in the first place. As we saw in ATLA, a person's ability to bend can be affected by their mental state. Air is the element of freedom, and throughout Book 1, Korra has been (unintentionally) weighing herself down with all her doubts and her fears about whether she can measure up to Aang, whether she can be the Avatar everyone needs her to be, and what she would even do with herself if Amon took away her bending. It's not until Amon has already jacked up her mojo and the only thing that matters to her anymore is saving Mako that Korra finally gets her priorities straight and wills herself to conjure up some air. And can I just say, after a whole season of Amon being OP and practically untouchable, that Korra finally blowing that creep out a window was immensely satisfying? Korra was about to or at least seriously considering jumping off that cliff, out of shame/a sense of duty to make sure there's an Avatar who isn't "broken" in the world, and nothing will convince me otherwise. -Is Korra magically getting her bending back and therefore retroactively removing all the stakes in the last two minutes of the show dumb? Yes (though I do know they had to have everything wrapped up in Season 1 bc they didn't get greenlit until after they finished). Didn't stop me from getting chills as Aang appeared with Roku and Kyoshi and all the other Avatars (was there a Fire Nation lady with no arms?), and certainly didn't stop me from being hype as all hell when the Avatar theme crescendoed. Hot DAMN that was a fantastic scene feels-wise.

I think his used to a lot of different anime and the kinda power scaling with that

Yh so this episode gets dark real quick. Also, they are dead for all we know. Tarlock deciding he and his brother has done to much damage and therefore going for a double s-word is powerful. Even more powerful that Noahtok/Amon probably knew what Tarlock was doing and the duo accept their end (although it was slightly rushed, and needed a bit more scenes to truly make sense) but as you said, 1 season limitation.

s2 isn't bad, I think you-ll still like it, but it's a bit disjointed. Still the things they focus on are pretty cool tbh.

the love predictions are so funny

milo reminds me so much of his grandfather when I see him. That kiddish Aang side

I think it's more how easy it is to produce and also how it's power has been dampened slightly. Like I do agree with him - obv bending will change but I think it changed way too much way too quickly in the space of 50 years kinda like how bloody quick Republic City went from a town to a massive city

I like how you guys addressed the pacing issues, but did so while keeping the bigger picture in mind. Some people get so frustrated and angry with the fact that korra learned airbending, went into the avatar state, and got her bending restored. I understand that it felt like it was done quickly, but those things (and a way for everyone else’s bending to be restored) had to be taken care of by the end of this season, because this was supposed to be a series finale, not a season finale. Imagine if things went the other way - the writers thought there was going to be a season 2 (where they could stretch out all of the main plot lines) but season 2 was taken away from them. At the end of season 1, the avatar would essentially be gone, and thousands of people would have lost their bending permanently. That’s it. That’s the end of the entire franchise (at that time). Did the writers have an idea that there might be a season 2? I’m sure they did but they didn’t take anything for granted. So they wrapped the main storylines now and still planted seeds for a potential new season. Also, a murder-suicide on Nickelodeon went HARD. I watched this show as a kid when it was coming out in 2012 and that scene was all anyone talked about at school the next few days.

Jasmin

I get your reasoning but don‘t forget that you can’t really compare their urban development with our real life urban development. The use of bending would only accelerate construction and development. Think of the advantages of metalbending when you’re a construction worker. Buildings could be built so much faster.

Anonymous

so good

ParsivalXP

Water bending can block your connection to your bending but not permanently like the avatar can using energy bending. The only way to get it back is using energy bending

I agree with Spartan about Amon's character. The best part of Korra for me is the villians. Their story and purpose is always so intriguing and so well done!! For me ATLA have the more iconic and better characters overall but Korra takes the villians to a whole other level

Leksa

If I'm not mistaken, it was confirmed when Korra went to the edge of the cliff she was contemplating suicide, so she could restart the cycle and the Avatar could have its bending back. TLOK is definitely a more mature show, on top of Tarlok killing both him and his brother... Nickelodeon/Avatar creators went dark lol - loving the TLOK reactions so far, I hope you watch the entire show and enjoy!
