I have always loved how Zuko, Azula, Iroh, and Zuko are family. For me personally and I imagine a lot of people it strikes a lot of emotions close to home (drug addiction, ostracization, expected standards, etc) Its sad how that goes for all parties involved usually. Sorry if TMI. But This show is really a masterpiece at that dynamic and is explored in such a deep almost therapeutic way.

I always get so stoked for the moment people get to watch these episodes. Honestly, to me, even though it was a small chunk of time, over half the episode to me is Zuko's speech. I love how this episode is the culmination of so many plots coming together all the way back from S1. I also like they didn't show Iroh escaping. I mean they probably could have made a scene that lived up to the hype they were building, but for Zuko to arrive and show us only the aftermath, I think that gave it more weight. I remember this was the point in S3 when I went from "What are they going to do with the rest of the episodes?" to "Why can't we have a whole season of episodes after this?" "We were taught the fire nation was the greatest civilization in history" "Wrong" I mean misguided for sure. But they are at least the most technologically advanced and economically prosperous of the time, which is why it has taken all 3 other nations to keep them at bay. The big lie here was how the war was narrated to their own citizens, as a way to "share the prosperity". A very common sentiment within crazy wealthy countries invading poorer ones. "It's justified. We're just trying to spread wealth/prosperity/democracy/"freedom" to the poorer countries" and then carpet bomb them, or invade and redraw their borders, or overthrow their leadership and install your own. A common line in the US at the time during the Iraq war, "They just hate us because of our freedom". Oh real quick, things started in the Southern Air Temple. We haven't seen the Western Air Temple yet. But I'd imagine you know this by now.

God I'm so hype for you guys entering this second half of the season 🔥🔥

Fun fact: Ming is voiced by Serena Williams because she was a big fan of the show and wanted to be part of it

I have really been looking forward to watching your reaction to this episode. I knew that the interaction between Zuko and his father would be epic for you. I love that final shot of Zuko following Appa. And I see that somebody else has already left the info that Serena Williams voiced Ming. They got her for this role because she was such a big fan of this series. I think it is a great little cameo.

Angelo Burton

I voted against combining episodes ~ boy was I wrong! Good job Patreon. Great reaction. I vote for the darker background. Visually it focuses the audience on you and your discussions imo. Excited for the rest of the series . . . and Korra 😉

I like the darker lighting. Looooove these episodes!!! The one thing that annoys me is something Spartan pointed out, how Katara had to sit out for like the entire second half of the invasion because her dad was injured. Surely there could’ve been someone else, someone much less vital, that could’ve been his crutch after she healed him initially 😵‍💫 Other than that one small annoyance, everything in this episode is epic. Especially Zuko, of course. His character arc is the best in any show I have seen, I will die on that hill. So looking forward to the rest of the season with you guys, you’re in for some great great episodes. 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻

I LOVE YOU GUYS FOR DROPPING BOTH

Ohhh I’ve been waiting for this!!! I’m literally putting off playing the new Zelda game to watch this first, that’s how much I’ve been anticipating these episodes 😂❤️

If I was Hakoda, the massive pride I would have in my children would be undying.

One of the great things about this show is how they demonstrate power scaling through lightning. Azula takes awhile to build up her attacks, Iroh takes less time, and Ozai didn’t need any time at all. It’s a clever way of showing how powerful they each are, and how much of a threat Ozai would be for Aang at any time, let alone during the comet.

I love Hakoda and his positivity to situations. Where can I find a man like that

I like your point, but I don't think you can fairly scale Azula, Iroh, and Ozai based on how quickly they are able to generate lightning. Reason being is that when you see Azula first using lightning she was still learning and practicing, but now she generates it so quickly it's like second nature. The only time we see Iroh using lightning was when he was teaching it to Zuko and he's clearly going through slow and precise movements to demonstrate to Zuko, I doubt it would take him that long if he were using it in combat, but he wouldn't IMO because of kill rate. Ozai is of course very powerful so it's not surprising he can quickly generate lightning, but at this point in the book I don't think you can definitively say who would be quicker at generating lightning - Ozai, jacked Iroh, or practiced Azula

If I remember correctly Katara shares the Kyoshi warriors are Azulas gang, and Sakka says the new plan is that they all think the avatar is dead and they are just going to go with a small team to take the palace because they will be powerless. So Azula only shared the info about the eclipse and to expect an attack, but no one knew the avatar was alive besides zuko. Azula wasn't sure, therefore gave zuko the credit, because she had nothing to gain, but had something to lose if she were wrong, so zuko gets welcomed back to the family, but took all the risk and was also separated from iroh, so big W for azula. spartans comments on ozai having azula fight his battles for him is somewhat right but again, he didn't know the avatar was alive and i think just had azula in a separate chamber for diversion on whatever attack happened, i wouldn't be surprised if zuko had the same instruction which might be why ozai was surprised to see him. Also, in times of war it's rare to keep high ranking political figures/royalty all together, separating them gives a better chance of the line of succession staying alive i have a strong feeling if ozai knew the avatar was alive they would have made big preparations to capture him there and then

Good point! I don’t necessarily think it’s the only measure for their power scaling- honestly I’d rate Azula and Iroh way higher than Ozai, simply because they’ve mastered non-bending combat. It was just a visual shorthand I’d noticed in the animation 😁

KaijinGarou

Yeah the real screw-up was the Earth King's again, not sharing he leaked information to Azula with the gang after they were unmasked. A bit of a diabolus ex machina there to guarantee the invasion plan would fail but he is also that stupid so...

JT_45

This two parter was EPIC. Avatar never disappoints and always sets the bar high. I love you guys genuine reaction from these episodes. Keep them coming!

Amazing reaction guys, and btw darker is better. Makes the background light pop more!

Stephanie Hundley

Hi, new Patreon here! Love your reactions, especially ATLA, best show ever! Can’t wait to see your reaction to all of it, it’s an emotional ride! Also, I like both lighting options, but I prefer the darker one I think, sets the mood a bit more I think.

Sean Carroll

given what we see from ozai later its obvious he is far greater then azula, Iroh would probably also lose to OZai potentially

i LOVE the darker backdrop :)

Daniel Castro

The darker backdrop is better

Not sure if you guys have been told this already but if you remember the last time we saw Bumi he was still (willingly) captured in omashu. Thats why hes not in the invasion. Also I like the dark setup better :)

Unique

One of the few instances that Azula calls someone from team avatar by their name.

Lol this thumbnail could EASILY be a discord emote

We actually have a similar one, but she is pointing at her head! :PudgeySmart:
