Tyrion's beetle story: it was about the pointlessness of killing things just for the sake of killing 'lesser' creatures and getting enjoyment of it. Jaime even gives you the parallel: countless people are being killed every day, just like those beetles. So what of the beetles of the world? Why should their slaughter matter? And yet Tyrion weeped for them. It was a metaphor.

Oberyn was such an amazing character. To come in to the show in the fourth season and instantly become one of the most iconic characters was amazing acting by Pedro. He had that fight won but let his need for revenge against Tywin get the better of him. I promise there are happy parts in the show too😂

fun fact - lord royce, the overweight old guy, we met his ancestor in HoD. Prince Deamon's first wife that had the 'accident' on the horse.

Brilliant reaction, my friends. The beetle story is one of my all time favorite scenes, and S. above describes it perfectly. That scene is so well written and so well acted, I sometimes think about it randomly, as it is a perfect metaphor for not only GoT reality, but our own. Also, Pudgy’s reaction to the head smash was EPIC. Love you guys….

HDN

So many people start hating on Sansa and blame her for doing that. Nice to see you understand her position and that she has to play the game and play it well.

Julien

The beetles monologue is about hapless humanity being subject to so much seemingly random violence, horror, and death. And that maybe there is a design behind all this misery but humans can at most divine only the existence of the design (like Tyrion with his cousin), not understand it. Ultimately it’s unknowable to us mere mortals (beetles). But in times of great predicament like Tyrion's, we naturally ask why this is all happening. What's the purpose of any of this? Anyway, worst monologue on the show IMO. There is a difference between understanding something and enjoying it. This monologue is like nails on a chalkboard for me.

HDN

@Julien in what way? The whole idea of it, the writing, the execution? Or the "Kunh Kunh" lmao. What exactly made it this horrible for you

Julien

@HDN All of it, including that stupid sound. And the length - it went on for sooooo long. It's probably the longest monologue on the show. Mostly, it's an example of the showrunners shoehorning their own "writing" into the story at a critical time instead of relying on the excellent source material. And the sheer length reflects their self-indulgence. I don't recall exactly what it is I would have preferred to this lengthy scene but back then I recall being frustrated by this episode and all the things that were omitted in favor of manufactured crap like this scene. It felt like there were important points to make. And this particular message about the randomness and indifference of the gods to human life HAD to be made, there were better ways to do it IMO. And definitely shorter ways.

Julien

@Will hurr durr i disagree therefore i downvote. yeah, this ain't reddit, thank goodness.

matt

I think it was the episode before or maybe earlier but during a council meeting when talking about Dany and the dragons Varys mentions she has two great swordsman at her sides and Tywin asks Wasnt Jorah spying for them? Varys tells him that he’s now completely shifted sides to Dany and then Tywin asks Varys if his little birds will reach that far across, basically Tywin threw a wrench in their trust to break up the team

matt

while I appreciate your delving into scenes for deeper meaning, the sad thing is this was a scene invented by D&D to get back at a writer (Orson Scott Card) for writing some scathing reviews about the show. It’s basically calling the writer an idiot and a simpleton.

Julien

@matt Interesting. Not sure if I buy that theory entirely (did they state this as fact anywhere?) but it would explain A LOT. It's a just shitty scene all around that had no business being there and being that long. Also, D&D are NOT known for the subtlety of their writing. To have a scene so long that has everyone go: "what does it mean" is EXTREMELY uncharacteristic of their style. Normally they would have a character directly state that the ways of the gods designs for all this suffering are unknowable.

If you guys like Jacob Anderson's portrayal as Grey Worm, I recommend seeing him as Louis in Interview with the Vampire on AMC. He is absolutely faaaantaasstic. Incredible acting by him. Couldn't have casted a better Louis myself. Completely different role but he is captivating. Also, I know people don't like the creepy in love thing that Jorah has going on but I do believe he was her real friend and that there was a mutual understanding, respect and affection between them both. It always sucks to see the scene where she questions him and sends him away. You can tell she is furious, yes but also totally betrayed and hurt by it. He was to her, her only true friend for so long. Romantic feelings aside, it was hard for them both. And Dany was brutal with Jorah because Dany is a brutal woman. People often forget how cutthroat she is because she uses that trait for things we all agree with. Ultimately though, Dany has a very ruthless and even vengeful side to her and shes as fierce as they come. Dany showed him mercy imo and Jorah is lucky she didnt have her dragons fire his ass up. She did him a favor.

HDN

@Julien there, the last phrase in your reply. So you're not against the whole message that had to be delivered. The execution was vapid, so incredibly tasteless. But the 2 main points put forward were that Tyrion was desperately trying to give his potential death some sort of meaning, and that the gods "work in mysterious ways". Even this idea wasn't theirs lmao. What an absolute shame.

David

RIP Oberyn, we all loved him. He beat the Mountain in combat but it was his arrogance that cost him his life. The fight is not over until the opponent is dead. This episode much like the Red Wedding changes the trajectory of the rest of the show. Just to help you in watching future episodes I will give you an unabridged list of all the characters that are safe:

Stannis loves grammar.

pour it out for dorn! were men are vipers! long sword is the wrong choice in close quarters, also spiking the ball before your in the endzone.oberon is still one of the greatest characters ever written or imagined on a tv show.

Nana-Afia

Yup. Jorah committed treason. His head should technically be on a spike. danys mercy saved him, but it gets lists in everyone's clairvoyance towards jorah. We have info that dany doesn't, her treatment of jorah as a result was beyond fair imo.

If you love Grey Worm’s acting, you’d *go crazy* over AMC’s Interview with the Vampire show. He’s the main character, his acting and accents are amazing, and right now there’s just one season out (7 episodes; second season is expected in October). It also has a HUGE cult following online, the critics went nuts for it, and you would get a TON of YouTube watches for your reactions.
