Speirs was amazing. Remember, he is also the one that told Blythe that to be a good soldier you had to know that you are already dead. I always thought that little speech Speirs gave to Blythe was one of the best in the series. Just shows you Speirs mindframe and why he was the soldier he was. You need men like him on your side.

In the show it really makes Dike look like he died; however he was wounded in the attack and officially replaced by Spiers irl, but Spiers did do his whole charge and take over

On D-Day when Spiers shot those prisoners it was because they had orders to take no prisoners because the invasion wasn't finished or won and they did not have the resources to hold prisoners on that first day. After the invasion was successful they then bring in the people and resources to keep prisoners.
