“You’re gonna get me killed, Lieutenant.” Two seconds later “I knew you’d get me killed.” Makes me laugh every time

Liam Smith

Blithe didn't actually die from his wounds in 1948. The series is based on a book by Stephen Ambrose, who interviewed survivors and real members of Easy company. None of them ever saw Blithe or heard about him again so they assumed him dead. When the series was broadcast, the Blithe family became aware of the mistake and revealed that he actually lived until 1967. He went on to fight in the Korean war and was an alcoholic and ultimately died from kidney problems after surgery for an ulcer, but even in 1967 he was still only 44 years old.

You are misunderstanding the sending them back to England, as in the War is over for them. The Army has thousands of troops and don’t use alle of them at the same time. The easy where at the front in France for a few weeks, so they send them back to England to rest und recharge. While that, they probably send another company or division to the front. Wars last for years, no Soldier can stay at the front all the time, so they always change the troops. Bring some back at a safe place and send them back after a time to replace others at the front.

Most soldiers who fought in different theaters say they would choose any terrain over a city. The only thing thats probably worse is jungle. In a city you have an infinite amount of angles you have to cover especially if the city have seen heavy fighting and the buildings are partially demolished. There is a lot of rubble breaking up the sharp angles of streets and houses and provides a lot of places to hide and also to conceal traps. I will try to help with some of the terminology S2 is usually refers to military intelligence and security C2 is command and control and they use this for all levels of the hierarchy but they usually refer to their own local ( battalion ) command When they were attacking Carentan those were French civilians, basically the same people you could see in Saving Private Ryan when they're trying to give Vin Diesel's character their little girl. They were non-combatant civilians the Allies were there to liberate them. Sadly there was a lot of collateral damage and a lot of civilian died but never intentionally. They were not being hit by missiles, it was a kind of artillery called mortar. Imagine a pipe abotu a 1-1.5m long, about 8-12cm in diameter ( I think the Germans used a lot of 8cm variants ) sitting on a plate angled about 70 degrees( variable). The top side is open and the crew top loads the pipe with the ammunition, one at a time. They just drop it into the pipe and as it hits the bottom, it ignites and the pressure shoots the thing out of the pipe. It has no propellant, its one single explosion in the pipe ( basically like a handgun bullet ) and it flies upwards. They set the direction by pointing the pipe towards the target and the range by the angle of the pipe. Its an indirect weapon which means it does not need line of sight, it goes up and down therefore it's extremely lethal, the only defense against it is a bunker with a thick enough roof. IT can fire about 4-12 rounds a minute and had a range of 1-4 km ( nowadays the 120mm can reach out to over 7km ). In a hands of an experienced mortar team its an extremely lethal weapon. If they had time to setup and set their range to possible targets, they can just point the thing towards the assulting force and start lobbing them at one of the pre-determined area like a building, a city square etc... It was not a super accurate weapon but it didnt have to be. In good hands it can absolutely decimate an infantry force. Soldiers learn very early on not to stand by walls. Bullets travel along walls. It hits the wall, then richocet along the wall and can hit someone that has no line of sight to the weapon that fired the round. Good stuff guys, cant wait the next.

Bit if good news for you guys…. THAT Albert Blithe did NOT die. This is by far the biggest inaccuracy of the series. It's only because the soldiers themselves believed him to have been dead decades. Easy Company survivors started having reunions. While organizing, records showed a DECEASED Albert Blithe and, naturally, they assumed it was him but, turns out, they was another soldier by that same name. The Blithe that served in Easy Company was transferred to a different regiment after recovering and very saw those guys again. He ended up serving in the Korean War and died from a perforated ulcer at the age of 44 in 1967.

They pull the airborne troops back to England because they are elite soldiers that are just wasted if left on the front line. You want them back where they can train, re-equip and be ready to drop again when the opportunity presents itself. Regular infantry divisions stayed deployed and in contact for months at a time, some suffering over 200% casualties by the end of the war. For instance the 3rd infantry division was in contact 553 days and lost 25,000 men even though it's top strength was 6,000. That's a 400% loss rate .

Thomas

The actual facts are that Blithe died in 1967 at the age of 44 from complications following emergency surgery for a perforated ulcer.

The scene where the german soldier was squashed by a tank, was actually filmed like that. Apparently the stunt guys build a coffin into the ground and the stunt guy who got rolled over by the tank was thus pushed into the coffin to make the scene more realistic
