Lol some people's reaction to hair is so strange to me. What's disgusting about hair from someone's head?? 😂

Did you guys recognize the head of the KGB as Maester Lewyn from Winterfell in GoT? The USSR ALWAYS had to be the BEST! My memories of the Olympics as a kid ALWAYS had questionable things going on with Soviet athletes.

Johnny_Raincloud

Well, when you live in a totalitarian communist cesspool like the Soviet Union, you cannot simply "tell the truth" if the truth reveals The State as incompetent. Do you know how they "eradicated" childhood starvation in the Soviet Union hospitas? They made it illegal to pronounce a child dead from starvation. Remember kids, just say NO to communism.

DominaZeta

For many years after this disaster Canada and other nations (US, UK, Sweden, Italy, Spain, etc.) ran special summer camps and programs to host children from the areas around Chernobyl to live in our countries for several months at a time. The idea was that our clean air, soil, food, etc. would give their bodies a break from the lingering contamination, to hopefully allow for some recovery. It did have some positive impact on their health. Usually, the kids would return to stay with the same volunteer family each year. Many of those children (now adults, of course) still keep in touch with their ‘adoptive’ international families. I think that’s one beautiful, positive thing that came out of this whole mess. (Besides the exposure and correction of the dangerous flaw in the RBMK reactors.)

Dyatlov is kinda overdissed but I'm not ready to go into that right now

43:41 Yes you can, for a short time, and a geiger counter is suggested to have with you. Well, now we have a war there (and one side had to ofc. stroll heavy machinery through the Red Forest), so you probably should not, but it will hopefully end around end of the next year. I have some friends who have visited surrounding areas before that invasion clusterfuck.

Lynda Olson

You can go to Pripyat today, well you could before the war. They now run tours to the exclusion zone and you can visit the new site where the new containment structure is and the city-which is a city suspended in time-you just can’t touch anything

Lynda Olson

Don’t forget during the Ukrainian famine that Stalin caused that killed 10 million people they had posters that said “DON’T EAT YOUR CHILDREN” yup that happened…

Greg Amor

Paul Ritter who so brilliantly portrayed the detestable Dyatlov, was also an extremely adept comedic actor, you can see him as the Dad in the bonkers Friday Night Dinner. Unrecognisable from his Dyatlov role. He sadly passed from a brain tumour a couple of years ago.

The sad thing is, nothing really changed, the mentality there is all the same. That's why they initiated that meaningless war, because nobody can say no to that warcriminal piece of shit putin fuck him honestly. I'm sorry for the words, but the ending just made me so angry again

I agree that this was a masterpiece. That entire trial was really well done. The explanation presented by Legasov is basically one big exposition dump because most people dont really understand the physics of a reactor so they needed a way to explain it. But it was built into the story so well, its seamless and really well done. It's really just the writers showing off at this point, this is how its done guys. I really enjoyed that part. Outstanding acting in this show, Stellan Skarsgard and Jared Harris are always great no matter what show or movie they're in. Many people says this disaster played a big part in the implosion of the Soviet Union becasue of the money that went into it and the loss of prestige they suffered. It is forbidden to live there but you can go there. I was there when I went to high school, it was an option for those of us who were interested in science. There were guided tours which were kinda semi-official, we looked around in Pripyat, saw the hospital, went close enough to the plant that you could see the sarcophagus over it. Few people had a Geiger counter and it showed slightly elevated levels that were still considered normal but the guide demonstrated that we must stay on the road. He took the counter, went off road about 15 meters into the bushes and it the counter went up considerably as he put it on the ground into the weeds. Nothing will live there for a very long time. It also shows that the cover they built is sealed properly. Reactors 1-3 were restarted after the accident but not for long, the last one ( reactor 3 ) was shut down in 2000. Rectors 5 and 6 were under construction at the time of the accident but were never finished. There was some worry becsaue it was a battle taking place near the power plant 2 years ago between Ukraine and Russia and everyone was like wtf stop it, if you damage the sarcophagus we're fucked. @Spartan there is a game series called STALKER which is arguably the most atmospheric survival FPS ever made. The story happens in the exclusion zone around and in the Power Plant. Its an amazing game, its highly anticipated sequel coming out later this year. When Diatlov said he wasnt in the room the look Bolton gave him made me laugh. He was ready hand him over to his son Ramsey lol :)

It is crazy to me that during the current war in Ukraine, when Russia first invaded they occupied an area near Chernobyl called " The Red Forest" many of there soldiers got radiation sickness and were forced to leave the area eventually. No one understands why they even went there, there was signs allover the place saying its a radiation zone. But of course they deny it happened. Russia is the country of lies. Always has been, always will be.

There are some great videos on youtube, of people visiting the Chernobyl exclusion zone, and Pripyat, some illegally. Look up the videos of 'bionerd23', who in one video examines 'Joker' - the West German police robot, and urban explorer 'shiey' - who even climbs the famous Pripyat Ferris wheel. Overall, the radiation is low enough to explore the area , IF you know what you are doing, and do not attempt to dig trenches like the Russians recently did :p And in one of her videos, bionerd23 even finds a single grain of reactor core granite, and does some tests on it in her hotel room (again, perfectly safe) But my number one recommendation on youtube to watch, are the original recordings of the Chernobyl Liquidators, cleaning up the area, including, very famously, the 'biorobots' clearing the reactor building roof. Look for the channel 'Telecon Studio' and they have uploaded original film footage, scanned at HD resolution. And you can tell many of the Chernobyl series scenes where re-created based on this footage. The video called 'Chernobyl 3828' has English narration and shows some of the best footage including the lunar rovers, the German police robot, clearing of the roofs, etc

The shot when Legasov is walking up to give his testimony is pure brilliance. I don’t know if you noticed, but the camera sways as he’s walking up, putting us right in his frame of mind. Director Johan Renck and writer Craig Mazin both won an Emmy for their work on this show, and deservedly so. Skarsgård took home a Golden Globe. Jared Harris was well-deserving of both an Emmy and a Golden Globe (as was Emily Watson), but went home empty handed. Craig Mazin hosted a ”Chernobyl” podcast about the making of the show, and the actual events. I very much recommend it, and it’s only six episodes so it won’t take up too much of your time. If/when you watch ”Band of Brothers”, that show also has a companion podcast which is fantastic.

Brilliant series. Terrific storytelling in a tight script of only 5 episodes. I hated history as a kid but have grown to love it the older I’ve become. Great TV & movies helped ignite my interest. Glad you 2 liked this. More of this please. 🙏🏽

I signed up for your patreon specifically for your reaction to this show. This is probably my favorite show of all time. Your takes resonate so much more as non-history buffs, and as Australians. Yeah there were some creative liberties taken, but its such a hard hitting show. I've never ever seen anything like it, and your reactions to this masterpiece are Grade A fantastic. Thanks for the entertainment and perspective from your side of the world.

Craig Mazin having done this and The Last of Us really does prove that he's got absolute chops when it comes to showrunning. I think he just has a knack for apocalyptic scenarios. Would be wild if he signed on for Fallout down the line.
