What a great surprise for my sucky Monday :) This movie launched the careers of Arnold, James Cameron, and Linda Hamilton. Arnold had the Conan movie and a couple other things under his belt but this put him on the road to superstardom. After this, James Cameron got to direct Aliens and he's pretty much had the Midas touch ever since. They made Terminator for barely any money but it was groundbreaking for the time.

Congrats on recognizing Bill Paxton. He's been in a bunch of James Cameron's movies including Aliens, True Lies, and Titanic. But he'll always be John Garrett to me. :)

As far as the Terminator movies go, I'm in the minority who likes the 3rd one. The last one, Terminator: Dark Fate is really good too, and another AoS connection because Gabriel Luna (Ghost Rider) plays a Terminator in it. T2 is pretty much everyone's favorite so I'm looking forward to that reaction!

The credits include a special thanks to the works of Harlan Ellison. That credit had to be added after science fiction writer Harlan Ellison sued because he believed Cameron had taken the story from a 1963 episode of the TV series Outer Limits that Ellison wrote. The episode is called "Soldier" and it does have many of the same elements. Also, rumor has it Cameron openly bragged about where he got the idea.

The fx were pretty awesome at the time and still stand up. I love the beam weapons. That is what a plasma beam looks like.

The crime is its own punishment. Imagine the...condition of a homeless man's pants.

Kelly Parks

I love at the gun store: "Phased plasma rifle in the 40 watt range." "Hey, just what you see, pall."

Kelly Parks

"I would keep all bullets under lock and key." -- Then how would you sell them?

The roommate Ginger was played by Bess Motta. In 1984 she was at the height of her 15 minutes of fame from being one of the dancer/choreographers on a popular cable exercise show called The 20 Minute Workout.

Kelly Parks

The name of the dance club -- Tech Noir -- is also Cameron's name for the genre this movie belongs to, along with movies like Blade Runner.

The white detective is Lance Henriksen. He went on to play the robot Bishop in Aliens. He's also in my most favorite vampire movie of all time, "Near Dark". (It also stars Bill Paxton).

Kelly Parks

When this movie came out it was just another movie. The details weren't widely known like now. So the scene of him chasing them in the alley and seeing them with machine vision was the first confirmation he was a robot, which came as a surprise to many.

Kelly Parks

I love the car Reese drives. A 70's Ford LTD, when gas was cheap and cars were made out of steel. It's a fucking tank.

Kelly Parks

I like the repair scene. The Terminator is very tough but not invulnerable. It takes damage.

Kelly Parks

There's a great article by Larry Niven about proper grammar for time travel.

Kelly Parks

The plasma rifles of Reese's time can take down terminators.

Kelly Parks

That outer living flesh can only take so much damage. It's dead.

Kelly Parks

So when John sent him back: "You're mission is to hook up with my mom."

Kelly Parks

Post apocalyptic doesn't mean primitive. Knowledge of the importance of oral hygiene wouldn't be lost.

Just fyi, we aren't close at all yet to true Artificial Intelligence, in part because we don't understand how a brain produces a mind. It's still a mystery.
