Hey Folks,

Its time for a quick update on the next Patron Series project. The attached picture shows some of the unfinished prototype components, and gives a good indication of where I'm heading with it - I will let you guess what it is!

There is a lot in this project. It touches on every aspect of the small shop, with much work on the lathe & mill, hand filing, casting, small component making, fixtures, jigs, and finishing. I've tailored the design so that you can take the core project as far you want to in terms of your own design aesthetic. In my case, I've used the project to share some of the processes I've been learning over the past year or so, but they are not central or essential to the project, and you can pick and choose whatever suits you.

This project also leads to a number of very useful tool projects that will run in parallel with the project, potentially adding a lot of small parts capacity to your shop.

More details to come as soon as I can, and as always, my warmest thanks for your support.

Cheers,

Chris.

Calipers or dial indicator?

Anonymous

Always exciting to see an update from you! Your skeleton clock videos got me involved with silversmithing, and it's so much fun watching you work.

Damian Sutter

A metrology project? Can't wait! This is great news!

Lucia

I'm just glad to see that you've been able to work on a new project.

Pete Kastner

looks like fully custom shop made beautiful dial indicator

Anonymous

I think it's a dial indicator, yes. It's got a '0.001"' indication on it.

Brian

At first it looked like a temperature/humidity gauge, but someone else said dial indicators which makes more sense

Spadge Fox

Wow that looks fantastic Chris! I also say metrology, dial indicator or dial vernier? Very beautifully crafted! Hope you’re keeping well and look forward to the build videos!

Anonymous

Is it the time traveling pocket watch from the 80’s TV show Voyagers?

Anonymous

That's what I thought at first, but couldn't figure the small dial into that equation ...

neal richard

Looks wonderful. Can't wait to see the series!

Anonymous

A fancy ruler!

Anonymous

waiting with bated breath!

Anonymous

Stunning! Can't wait to see how you did it!

Andy Pugh

Basketweave dial? Have you made a straight-line engine too? (if you can't wait for Clickspring: https://youtu.be/LBiiDpexmA8 )

Anonymous

I’m thinking it’s a runout dial gauge. Whatever it is, it’s every bit as stunning as I’ve come to expect. Very excited to see the project!

Francis Milsom

Got to be an IMPERIAL dial gauge. Your usual standards don't seem to have shifted. Can't wait. But IMPERIAL!

chris grainge

Sounds great... and looks amazing

SkaveRat

Your use of imperial in this tool is... disappointing, to say the least

Anonymous

I love the art deco font!

Anonymous

Steppin' up to guilloche!

Steven Naslund

Very classy dial indicator.

Anonymous

I Like it! Looks like a dial gage to me---

plato gonzales

That there's a micrometer! Very curious to see how you did the pattern. Guilloche is radial... what's this pattern called?

Stubbs

looks beautiful! I like how you indicated what it was. All that being said I can't wait for the day imperial leaves the chat...

Matthew Wilson

"a good indication".. I see what you did there.... 🤣

John S Dilsaver

This looks beautiful. I'm not sure my forging skills are going to apply here.!

Worst pocketwatch ever!

Natan Getschel

Ooh, will be very cool to see what goes into a bespoke dial indicator! ;) Have you considered/tried watchmaking before? Would be really interesting to see you maybe make a pocket watch. Unless you wouldn't want to because you'd need to just buy a fair number of parts off the shelf, like the jewels and balance spring.

Dilapidus

You oughta just put a nest cam in your shop. We'd all go bonkers.

Mark Hobster

Wow that looks ultra sexy already, that will be one huge indicator :)

Leo G.

Don't we need to see the completion of the Antikythera build first?

rolf redford

Ohh can't wait to see it finalized!

Duncan Luddite

You can hand make balance springs, from scratch, from music wire for the old Verge watches (they only had 2 - 6 coils). It's very satisfying seeing it run accurately with something you shaped with your hands. It involves thinning it to the required dimensions with diamond hones and polishing cream, then curling it with fine pliers, or similarly shaped, sturdy tweezers. :)

Francis Milsom

Got to be an IMPERIAL dial gauge. Your usual standards don't seem to have shifted. Can't wait. But IMPERIAL!

Anonymous

Fantastic! Can’t wait for this build.

Why Imperial? Only a small portion of the world is stuck to Imperial.

Reed Bowman

Looking forward to it! The quality of your videos and your workmanship made you one of my fastest Patreon subscribes, and possibly the fastest I've gone from watching my first video to watching every one available on the channel. So glad there's more coming!

I like the idea... but I join the “objection”: what about Antikythera??

Anonymous

And about imperial/metric: this photo depicts an imperial dial, but plans have always been for both units, so I would not be worried about :) My side of the world is metric, by the way...

Nick Cliffe

Shiny & Tiny!

Drew Keats

Awesome. I can't wait to see how you made the mechanism and achieved the guilloche finish... in a home shop! This is going to be another impressive one!

Hogtown Pens

yesssss - inject it straight into my veins!! I'm jonesing for some new clickspring content!!

Christopher Wolford

This looks great. If your looking for ideas I would be open to another "patrons" where you teach core skills and help build a small shop with things like a gingerly lathe but clock work size, forge you already have that covered I believe, would love to see your take mpcnc, it could be a clickspringCNC, etc.. At any rate keep up the best content I have ever seen! For real you could be on the Discovery channel!!

Christopher Wolford

Haha indeed. I binged watched most of the content then slowly going through them doing what I can.

jason black

Neat! I'm very interested in the mechanism, and in the guiloche.

Anonymous

It has the classic look of a dial indicator with a 1" range of travel. My guess is a dial indicator.

Duncan Luddite

So Chris, is the guilloche machine something you built in the workshop? I really hope so ;)

Anonymous

At first glance, I thought hygrometer, but on a closer look... no. Something probably useful to you in even later projects for measurements.

Roel Jordans

Hahaha: 'gives a good indication', now what would this be!

Anonymous

You better have a metric version too!

Anonymous

Beyond excited for this series Chris!

Anonymous

Awesome stuff Chris, thanks for the update! "The attached picture ... gives a good *indication* of where I'm heading with it" - I see what you did there ;)

Anonymous

That '0.001' hints that it's a fairly precise 'indication' as well :o)

Graeme Brumfitt

That looks nice Chris! Massive under statement, hope yer well! TFS, GB :)

Borislav

Looks like a dial indicator and I am as ready as ever :D

Paul Devey

Love tool projects!

Would a DTI be a good followup after this one is complete?
