Hi Folks,

Given that were going to be spending a fair bit of time indoors, I thought it might be a good idea to have a regularly scheduled Discord so that we can get together each week and let off a bit of steam. I was thinking something like a regular Sunday 6pm EDT Tick Talk where we can discuss your latest project, maybe start a new one, solve a few problems, and just generally hang out to discuss anything you want really. Do let me know your suggestions below, and we will get this happening.

Cheers,

Chris.

     ----------------------------

Hi Folks,

A quick update for you - My co-authors and I have spent the last 4 weeks writing reponses as part of the peer review of the paper. If you're unfamiliar with this process, this is where the reviewers (generally academics familiar with the field) provide a written critique of the proposed finding, and then the authors provide a detailed response. Often this leads to some changes in the paper, with the intention being that it leads to an improvement in the argument.

This to-and-fro may be repeated again, but I'm happy with how we've responded in this round, and for now we wait for further action from the editor and reviewers to know what the outcome will be. One thing I'd like you to be aware of is that publication is not guaranteed - We think the finding is solid, but the reviewers are not obliged to agree, and at the level of journal to which we are submitting, rejection is common.

In any event, this of course means that the video making has been a bit slow, so I've again decided to suspend charges for all existing Patrons for the month of March. I'm going to spend the rest of the month catching up on the video shooting, project prototyping, and also learning a new skill for use in future projects - more on that later.

Again, from your perspective nothing much changes. You will still have access to all of the Patron content, and I will still be contactable by email, Discord, direct message, and the post comments if you have any questions, or just want to say G'day and see what I'm up to today.

Thank you again for your continued support folks.

Cheers,

Chris.

All the best! Excited to see the result of your hard work!

If your paper is rejected will you still share your discovery with us? I'm sure I'm not the only person who is intensely curious about your findings.

Jeremy Abel

Wishing you all the luck on the paper and such! Will we be able to read a pre-press version at some point?

Anonymous

In any event I want to know what you may have found. I know you can not say until after publication, but I wait with baited breath.

clickspring

Thanks Jeremy - All going well, a pre-print won't be required, but no matter the journal outcome, you will get to read about our finding here :)

clickspring

Honestly, I can hardly wait to share it - this process is maddeningly slow. And yes no matter the outcome with the journal, you will certainly get to read it - Cheers :)

Anonymous

I'd been wondering why the long gap in video updates, not that im complaing I've watched the skeleton clock and antikythera series I dont know how many times 🤣 always looking forward to more from my favorite metal working channel

Anonymous

Chris, I still want you to take my money. This is one of the reasons why I choose to be a patron. I want to support your unique endeavors, your research, and your creations!

John Gentzel

I appreciate the suspension of charges its fair dinkum if I have the expression correct. Bur speaking just for myself, I think that you are actually advancing our knowledge of what the ancients were capable of. I had an interesting history prof a long time ago, she taught me that the words "primitive" and "stupid and ignorant" are not the same. Just because we do things in a different way today does not mean that some Einstein level genius 2000+ years ago did not have a breakthrough of similar proportions. So go ahead and charge my subscription I am spellbound to find out how the story ends.

Brian Ballsun-Stanton

Speaking as an Aussie academic (tangentially affiliated with ancient history), I am delighted that I'm able to support this research! Let me know if you'd like me to show your coauthors and yourself how you can set up a preprint in an appropriate place upon acceptance (depending on the open access agreement you folks have signed) and how you can manage supplemental data files (i.e. better archiving of the videos and drawings that does not rely on the whim of YouTube).

clickspring

Thanks Brian, very much appreciate the offer. A lot depends on how things go with this journal, but I will certainly reach out if I need to - Cheers :)

Leonard Solomon

Chris, I have the greatest respect for what you do, and much gratitude that you take the time to share it with us. (My own shop work has benefited from many of the techniques that you illustrate.) Whatever the verdict of the journal reviewers may be, I'm looking forward to reading about your discovery, and of course, I am hoping they find it worthy of publication.

My name is Rick

Hey Chris, is it possible to only suspend particular tiers? I suspect a number of us would happily switch to non-suspended tiers to help support the research as well as the projects and videos.

clickspring

Unfortunately no, there's just the one on/off switch for all tiers - very much appreciate the thought mate, thank you :)

Anonymous

I’ll looking forward to what your reviewers critique of your findings, and your response.

Anonymous

I was wondering what kind of routine/schedule do you have to set time aside for your work, paper, videos, etc.

chris grainge

I'm with all the people who would happily keep the payments going! I edit a scientific journal and the process is very slow from both sides, hopefully you get sorted soon. I get the impression that you like anonymity, how are you going to deal with that with authorship etc?

clickspring

It tends to be fairly organic - my day generally runs from 6:00 am to about 8:00 pm, with an hour off somewhere for lunch. It usually starts with answering emails, then I get into whatever the current project video needs, like a given part or whatever. Its usually fairly clear what needs to be done on any given day. If I have down time because I'm waiting on stock delivery or something like that, I'll spend the day on the CAD for the next projects, or just something else lower level to keep the whole thing ticking along. I tend to narrate at the end of all shooting, so thats a different kind of day, and then there are things like the paper which has to take precedent over everything because of the slowness of the other side of the process - If I were to drag my heels, then we truly would never see the end of it! - Cheers :)

clickspring

Thank you mate - You're right, I do prefer the focus to be on the work - Here's hoping the finding is a lot more interesting than me :)

Mr Bryce Stoddart JP

Thanks for the update, Not much I can say as its just the same feeling that everyone has said above me. Good luck with all the work on the paper.

Gary Knight

Hi Chris. Forgive me for repeating messages above but likewise, please keep the money. My tiny contribution was intended to support your research, the amazing videos are just a bonus. As a former academic I am all too familiar with the process of paper submission. Good luck. All the best, Gary

clickspring

Thanks very much Gary - unfortunately it's a single on/off switch for the entire charge process, but I do very much appreciate your encouragement mate, thank you :)

veritanuda

Thanks for keeping us in the loop. I know peer reviewed papers can be a pain and sometimes it makes you wonder if it is all worth it. Even if it does not get published you can still submit it yourself to SciHub and let others discover what you have discovered about this most fascinating of machines. I appreciate you suspending Patreon, but truth is I think you are more than worth supporting while doing research, what you learn and demonstrate to us is worth a little every month. I can honestly say I have learned a lot already just going through the back catalog so I am eager to see what else I can learn going forward. Just the deep dive into marking fluids had me riveted for ages just trying to research what else could be used. Great job! Good luck with the editing and no worries... I'll still be here next month and the month after that and after that. Cheers mate!

Gert Sønderby

I'm a major fan of experimental archaeology of the sort you've been doing here. I feel like it has an important part to play in our understanding of our past, and the value of that cannot be overstated.

Gert Sønderby

(And I also really wish I could economically support you in that, so don't be pausing the Patreon on my account.)

Anonymous

All the best, Chris! Looking forward to the next video.

Anonymous

Great stuff Chris! Any chance you can share the draft of the publication here?

Anonymous

Always a pleasure to see an update Chris, good luck getting published.

Richard Thompson

Thanks for the update... Really hope it gets published as I bet it was very thoroughly worked out. Looking forward to the upcoming videos.

Anonymous

I can only join my voice to the others: probabily, out of official institutions, Patreon and similar means are the only way to bring up research and findings that could have never surfaced otherwise. Your work in general appears to be a work of love, beyond the "call of duty", so to say, and this deep research reflects it. I understand your reasons to suspend Patreon charges, but me as many here, love to support this kind of commitment nonetheless. The best thing I can tell you is that for me you are on the right track :-)

Anonymous

There is absolutely no reason to suspend charges. I’m no big sponsor but I view you, Torbjörn Åhman the blacks

Anonymous

smith and Andy at Boatworks today as part of my media feed just like Public radio. No need to suspend charges

Thomas McGinnis

Thanks for the update .... looking forward to reading the paper.

Natan Getschel

Great to hear the progress on the paper but.... take our money! It's absolutely worth it.

Anonymous

nice to hear! Don't let the reviewers get to you too much. Some are genuinely interested in improving the publication, others just want themselves to get cited by you and others again don't seem to want to understand your concept. Depending on who the reviewer is, you'll get a completely different input. At least in my field the revieing system is quite crooket but it's on teh way of getting better! I wish you all the best, and I hope we'll gert to see your publication ASAP! Greetings Johann

Anonymous

Very excited to hear the update and wish you good luck on the review process. Thanks for all you do!

Anonymous

+1, I agree with the overwhelming opinion here that it is incredibly classy of you to suspend our charges for a brief time, thinking that you aren't giving value for our support, but that you are in fact using that support for something that we all would like to encourage. Your vids and work are on a level that is head and shoulders above the rest, and it encourages us to do our best work. That is worth a lot! Keep doing what you do, and know you can count on the Clickspring nation to have your back!

Mike Michelizzi

I know it's like an echo chamber in here but I'm happy to see an update and I'm glad that the review process is moving along. Good luck with the publication!

Jeff Armstrong

I can only second everyone else's comments And wish you all the best. Like all who have commented we are looking forward to reading your paper - whether it gets accepted for publication or not. I am sure that we all will find it an interesting read.

Jonathan Becker

I encourage you to keep charging me despite your modesty. Your reported endeavor is impressive and deserves support.

clickspring

Not a draft, but one way or another you will get to read the paper here - Cheers :)

Kevin Reardon

You could have published quicker if you sent it to the Daily Mail. Best not do that. Stay this course.

Anonymous

Why suspend I am sure all of us support your efforts. I am sure the academic journal is not going to make you rich! Or even pay for a cup or coffee..

Phil Sydor

Hi - yes, do continue and take my money. As others have said the quality and content of your videos is superb and worth every cent of my modest payments! I too look forwards to reading your paper if possible.

Anonymous

Think we all knew when we signed up that you werent going to post a new video every day, I like the gesture but no need. Cheers

evertw

Hi Chris, I signed up not so much for the video's but to allow you to do what you do, including research, that will be sure to find its way into amazing future video's. So do feel free to charge us as agreed! I love how your work is shifting into experimental archeology, and papers tend to come with that ;-)

Anonymous

No reason to suspend my payment. I appreciate the quality of your videos.

Anonymous

Hello Chris, thanks for the update. Good luck with the reviews, publishing a paper can be a chore. I'm looking forward to reading it a lot. May I ask to which journal did you submit?

Matt Lukes

Very excited to read the paper when you're done Chris

Anonymous

Chis, I hope you will share the paper with us regardless of what a highbrow journal decides. Your content is so “rich” I have no problem with supporting your efforts regardless of video content a month or two. I ALWAYS learn marvelous stuff on your channel. Well done all the way around!

clickspring

Thank you mate! Yes I will be sharing the paper with you regardless - Cheers :)

Justus Dehegovit

I wonder how developed the patina on the mechanism is at this point. Jokes aside, I'm glad to hear from you again. Personally I understand the logistics behind a paper publification a little bit so I wish you the best of luck with the reviewers. And once again, you never have to suspend our charges, we gladly support you even in these times of low content.

Jeremy

I'm also in the no-need-to-suspend camp. I contribute to support the interesting projects you do. I think it's really cool that one has lead to research. I do also appreciate trying to be honest with money, but I've enjoyed a lot of your content from before I was a patreon contributor to you.

Anonymous

Goodluck on the research mate and I look forward to reading the paper when it's done. One other thing, I believe I read somewhere that you had a discord but I cant for the life of me find it.

John S Dilsaver

Hi Chris, I'm not really a researcher but I've published one peer reviewed article and have been through the process. It does take time. If the quality and clarity of your article is anything like that of your videos you will set a new standard for academic writing! I appreciate you keeping us informed. I've been interested in the antikythera mechanism for many years and have the shelf of books and articles. Your videos have helped my understanding more than any other work. Thanks!

clickspring

Thank you mate - more info on connecting to the Clickspring Discord here: https://support.patreon.com/hc/en-us/articles/212052266-How-do-I-receive-my-Discord-role- Cheers :)

clickspring

Terrific to hear that John :) Here's a recent talk from Jo Marchant that you will enjoy, with thanks to Ralph McCoy for sending me the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iv-zWbxm2lY&t=10s - Cheers :)

Anonymous

Hey Chris, glad to hear you got through the first round of reviews! As an academic (Physics, not humanities) I am consistently surprised by how useful referees can be. I don’t think there is one paper I’ve written that the review process didn’t improve. It can be super frustrating, but hang in there and good luck! Looking forward to reading it when it’s accepted! Thanks for all your awesome work! - Tom

clickspring

Thanks Tom, and I completely agree about the usefulness of referees - Its certainly been frustrating and more than a little painful, but there is no doubt that the process works to positively improve the argument. It has been an amazing thing to see the article clarity continually improve, after I was sure that it was about as good as we could get it - Cheers :)

Joshua Clark

Chris, I absolutely love your work. With your experience gained with the skeleton clock, have you thought of revisiting that but powered by a tourbillion.

Kevin Reardon

Hey Chris. I was wondering if you had the CAD drawings for the Antikythera? I put myself at the $3 range for them.

clickspring

Not at this stage mate - the project (and so CAD) remains in flux, and likely will remain so until the very last stage of the build due to the evolving research. I should also point out that the plans aspect of Patreon applies from the $1 tier and relates to the Patron Series projects only ie the hand vise (PS#1), BSC (PS#2), and the Patron Series projects that will follow - I do plan to release the CAD for the AM once the project is complete, but I haven't yet decided exactly how that will happen - Cheers :)

Kevin Reardon

Dear lord I understand. I went with the $3 level in hopes to get the CAD drawings. Sorry, but I'm fascinated by CAD as I've tried it several times. Your clock making skills were well past my understanding as to what it was going to take to build it. Unfortunately I have SketchUp which does not seem to be able to convert certain file formats.

clickspring

Maybe have a look at Fusion360? Has all the bells and whistles, but free for non commercial users. Like all of them a bit of a steep curve when you first dive in, but it gets easier after a little while :)

Anonymous

That's okay Chris I understand keep up the hard work. I look forward to your new videos. Just a thought, why do you guys publish the book on your own if they reject it, many artist are doing it! Take care.

Anonymous

Chris, I really enjoy your video's and spent the last couple of weeks catching up on the shorts. The reason I decided to support you on Patreon is for the cool stuff you have done and stuff to come. IMHO you should not cancel monthly payments because you spent the last couple of months on research! UNCANCEL THE CANCELATION!

Gregor Shapiro

Hey Chris- Any plans to put an Equation of Time mechanism on the Antikythera device to bring it up into the modern age? ;-) How about a quartz movement? and an LCD display?

veritanuda

Oh cool.. I am not sure how much time I will have given we live on opposite sides of the planet but it is still cool to do an answer questions spot. Pretty sure there are plenty to keep you busy.

Brian Ballsun-Stanton

I hope you're in "Minor edits and resubmit" rather than "Revise and resubmit" (The latter... sucks.) Anyways, you're awesome, and it's great supporting published research! Let me know if you have any questions regarding the journal's open access or data policies. Or if you want to get your videos together into a properly DOI'd data archive for the paper.

Benny

Bugger. I'm on the road AGAIN; missed the last couple for the same reason. Perhaps I need an Antikythera mechanism to predict when my moon aligns with yours ;-)

clickspring

Terrific , catch you on Sunday. I will do another post later in the week to advertise the time and day again - Cheers :)

Anonymous

You know I’m sure that I am not the only supporter that feels your academic work is important enough that even with slow video production you should let our support keep coming in. I know I support you because what you do is more important than just getting a cool video to watch.

clickspring

Thank you mate, very much appreciated - at this stage my intention is to resume charges from 1st April - Cheers :)

Giovanni Viscardi

With all this going on, I love this, something to look forward too :)

Hi Chris,

Hi Chris, I have just joined and I certainly echo the sentiments of Mike oliver

Greg

Hi Chris, I have a lathe and a mill, but not a combo Lathe/Mill. Do you have a recommendation on cutting teeth, should I figure out a way to add cutting capabiliy to my lathye cross slide, or get a rotory table for the lathe, or ..... I am very handy with electronics/motors and it would be fun to design and build a electronicly controlled indexer for cutting teeth. the crux of the design would be the worm gear with "no" backlash.

clickspring

Hi Greg, my preferred way of doing it is on the lathe with a vertical slide to carry the cutting gear. I like this way of doing it for several reasons - It means I can true out the blank precisely before the cut (as opposed to dialing it in), and I can accomodate the really large wheels that sometimes crop up in clockmaking. However a perfectly reasonable alternative is to do as you suggest and come up with a way to index some sort of spindle on the mill (dividing head, rotary table, home brew solution etc) and then run the cutter in the mill spindle - Its usually going to come down to one or the other of these options. I am aware of several home designs of electronic indexers - definitely a worthwhile path to consider. I use a commercial one to index my lathe and love it - Cheers :)

Noah Focht

Wait is the antikythera machine already done? Sorry been awhile since I’ve been on here

clickspring

Hello mate - No, the build is on pause while I get some research published. Back onto it once it is - Cheers :)
