Hi Folks,

An update for you!

The research paper is progressing well, and the bulk of the work is complete. The process is now largely out of my hands, but I should have an idea of how its progressing through peer review within a few weeks. It has been an excruciatingly slow process to navigate, and I may yet have to divert more time into it if we hit any snags. For now though, I'm going to get back into the video making, and so Patron charges will recommence from October 1st. I'll keep you posted on the paper as I learn more.

As it happens, there was quite a bit of hurry up and wait throughout the process, so I used some of the down time to catch up on the CAD work for the next few projects, as well as pick up some new skills. One in particular I'm pleased to be able to share with you today in the video above. This is a short excerpt from a collaboration video that has been slowly coming together over the last 6 months, and should be out in a few days. And yes, I've kept every sketch and butchered piece of metal all along the way! So at some point I will put together a video that covers the whole process of getting to grips with this new skill from start to finish. Keep an eye out in the future for some vids on electroplating too.

You'll notice that the video above is on a new channel called "Clickspring Clips". I figure there are a lot of people who don't yet know that they love machining who probably skip right past a 20 minute machining video, so this is something I want to try out to see if it ropes in those potential viewers. Its mostly old content presented in a much shorter format, so you will already have seen most of it, and I've only just started to get it all organised. But if you have the time, head on over and give it a sub and maybe share a few of the clips - lets see if we can wake up the YouTube algorithm :)

Many thanks for your patience and continued support folks, and keep an eye out for the collab video to drop in the next few days, its easily one of the best fun videos I've ever made.

Cheers,

Chris.

You've piqued my interest!

Hi Chris, Welcome back! I'll subscribe to that channel asap and I'm thrilled things are going smooth enough with the research that you have time to get back to creating 👍 Related question: Reddit has been asking after you. I quoted part of one of your previous Patreon posts to set people at ease, which got some positive (and relieved) feedback. People are going to be happy you're back :) Are you going to be posting something similar to this message on your subreddit? If not, do you mind if I do?

Jack DenHartog

Hopefully no one mistakes the brevity of the clips as a lack of time and effort. I could believe that it took a year to make something as intricate as that, even with power tools!

Lee Breisacher

Amazing work, as usual. But I must admit I'm not a fan of the frequent video cuts, especially at the beginning of the clip. I find it a bit annoying even.

Anonymous

Some awesome work and very satisfying to watch

Jeff Armstrong

Time consuming indeed. What are you using as an engraving tool? From the buzz it's some sort of vibrating tool.

Anonymous

YAY! I got some of that good Clickspring Fix. As always I will wait for whatever you have next. You are one of mu favorite channels.

Matt Waite

Good to have you back. And WOW 😲

Graeme Brumfitt

Ye picked an easy one there Chris... Try something harder. TFS G :)

Anonymous

Insane work, my utmost respect. A question, do you use a machine for engraving or do you do it manually with hammer and chisel?

Leon

Cheers Chris!

Benny

Love your work Chris; I am in awe. To quote Yoda "mmm, impressed I am". What is that piece of art work going to end up on?

Anonymous

You never cease to amaze me Chris. Your level of skill is inspiring. Can't wait to see the whole thing. Plus your production level is right up there. Thank you.

Anonymous

Unbelievable. The skill and manual dexterity required for that. Not to mention the patience. Well done!

Duncan Luddite

Sweet :) Hand engraving is one of the things I hope to learn someday; in the meantime I will very much enjoy watching your journey in this beautiful craft. And all the best with the Antikythera paper; looking forward to that too.

Alex Banks

Good to see you back at it Chris :D How do you find the GRS system? I'm considering picking one up in the future for engraving work too, have there been any pitfalls or things to consider when purchasing? Figured it would be best to ask somebody who's recently gone through the whole learning process haha.

Paul Busby

Wow, that looks hard. Made to look effortless again. Really want to know what it is for. Was that gold plating at the end. Just love all your video's.

Mark Wilkes

“Hmm. I’ve made a clock. Too easy. I’ve recreated the Antikythera and made groundbreaking discoveries. Meh, small potatoes. How about I learn to do engraving, while holding down a day-job, and doing academic research. Easy - gimme a month or so.” I fall and genuflect.

That bit of metal is one of the most beautiful artifacts I have ever seen. I'm a big fan of 19th century architecture and aesthetics, the scrollwork, gothic and baroque ornamentation that was on lots of tools and buildings and machines in that period is breathtaking in its flourishing form and the sheer amount of human effort that goes into making it.

Anonymous

Thank you for making it Chris

Iain Deas

He’s alive 🙏🏻

I would love to learn engraving. Only problem is I am a terrible drawer. Looking forward to more videos.

Mike Michelizzi

Welcome back, I hope everything goes smoothly with the paper. Your "new skills picked up during down time" is so much more impressive than anything I'm close to mastering - thanks for sharing!

Emmas Spareroom Machineshop

wonder if it occurred to you, a published paper with a horological link might fast track you to a BHI fellowship? I'm sure it has, but if not, then it might be worth chasing up?

Anonymous

The biggest reason I watch your videos is that you take your time to do things right. Keep in up, but don't feel rushed.

clickspring

I am currently doing the the AM dials with hammer and chisel, but all of the work on this piece was done with a pneumatic GRS tool - Cheers :)

clickspring

I love it - super easy to use and sooooo much faster than hammer and chisel. Nothing bad to report other than its a relatively expensive bit of kit - Cheers :)

clickspring

Thanks Paul, so pleased you enjoy them :) Yes gold plating, for a bit of added bling. Will show you the whole thing in a couple of days - Cheers :)

clickspring

Definitely what I was shooting for in the design of the overall device Andrew, so pleased you like it - Cheers :)

clickspring

Reckon I can help with that Brian - I had zero drawing experience before starting on the engraving path, but have picked up some shortcuts that I think everyone can use. Mostly its just learning a set of rules, and then putting in the practice time. I will pack it all into a video as soon as I can get to it - Cheers :)

you never cease to stagger me with your work, you always inspire me to do more and try new techniques, love your videos, so educational, so happy your back, keep up the fantastic work, all the very best mate.

Drew Keats

I'm glad the bulk of the paperwork is behind you. What a remarkable video! You have a knack of making everything look effortless and easy. Clearly, it isn't easy, so it shows that you have a natural talent. Another truly enjoyable video. Excited to see the remainder of the current projects, and whatever is coming up in the works. If this video is a taster of that, it's going to be well worth the wait.

Adam Slagle

Well, a friend who I told about your channel described it to me as “metalworking porn”. While it’s not an everyday description, I agree with his sentiment. Glad to have you back, and as always, you never disappoint!

Anonymous

Subbed as requested ... also because I'm interested. Welcome back you have been missed

Chris Muncy

So I was intrigued by the engraving, then you plated it??? Fantastic as always Chris. On a side note: How about creating a $10 tier for support? I'd just on that to help make up for the past 2 months.

Anonymous

I'm so glad you are back! And back with a bang - what a wonderful piece you made. Thank you!

Anonymous

I have really missed your videos, but understand the hard work you've been up to. I can't wait to see more!

Anonymous

Great video! How much time did it take you to engrave it?

Anonymous

Great to have you back!!

Anonymous

Looks fantastic! Would you consider providing links to these papers, once they are published? As an academic, engineer, and gear enthusiast, I would love to read what you and your peers have been working on!

Anonymous

This clip gave me a boner... Awesome work, as usual! I'm glad you're back Chris

clickspring

Thanks Chris, I'll put some thought into what the rewards could be - Cheers :)

Iain Deas

Hey Chris. Welcome back 🤣 how long have you been working on the engraving? That looks like the work of someone practicing a lifetime?!

Anonymous

Thanks for the update! I just wanted to say thank you also for inspiring me to become a machinist! Your videos were the first machining content that I had seen and it really made an impression on me. I'm just now finishing up my cnc certification, so I'll be working in a shop soon!

Anonymous

Chris, I have quite a few examples of 19th century English scroll engraving on rifles and this looks quite a bit different than what I'm used to seeing. The scrolls are much larger and you have more depth to the design. That being said, your engraving looks incredible! Well done!

Brad Thayer

Well, darn, you’re deeply talented at something else. Beautiful work and an extreme level of patience and focus. Interested in eventually learning some of the tools and magic elixirs you used in the video. Welcome back!

clickspring

I've been off and on since Oct last year, mostly in the last 3 months. Still lots of little errors, but getting better!

clickspring

Thank you mate! A slightly more accurate descriptor might be 'Horological English Scroll', but the word horological is a bit long and I felt it would take up too much room on the thumbnail! Basically I've been learning the style that was used on the high end English watches and chronometers from late 17th to early 19thC

Anonymous

Very nice work. Looking forward to more videos when you can 😊

Clifton Ballad

Glad your back! I can't wait for more videos, especially because I want to know what kind of tool you're using to do that! I thought I head buzzing like it was powered, I can only imagine the patience the old masters had to put into work like that with a hammer and chisel (or what ever the proper tool term is lol) Electricity has to make that soooo much easier.

Luther

Now you're just showing off. Looks amazing as always. You're a true artisan.

Michael Olson

Clicksping video - a 20 minute machining video. Mona Lisa - a painting of someone's mom. (OK, that's a bit over the top, but you get the idea - lol!) Glad to see you're getting some time to make videos again. I hope your research paper goes over well!

Ken Hilke

Is the engraving tool powered? I hear a buzzing in some of the background. Great work, Look forward to all your work.

Dustin

Whoa... What was the original video? Do you explain the chemical/electro plating in that one?

A1BASE

You're an absolute machine! This is absurd.

Duane

Magnificent. More inspiration (and tools). I'd be happy to wait years for this kind of content.

Anonymous

Good to see you're alive and kicking! I've not seen much on engraving tools before (haven't researched), and i'm just amazed at how that thing works. If you're looking for a small video to smash out, I'm sure there is a bunch of other people like me interested in the workings of said engraving tool, and maybe some techniques and understanding of the limits and what you can do with it. Good luck with the waiting on the paper, I hear it can be frustrating but eventually rewarding :-D

clickspring

Yes definitely will do one on engraving soon Ben - I'm back onto the AM build sections that are not paper related for the next few weeks, and depending on how much progress I make, I might then shift to a TGT on engraving or maybe the plating setup. re the paper, yes the wait is very frustrating. It feels a bit like being back in college waiting for exam results!

Ouroboros Armory

Subbed.. Even though I watch the entire bit of all of your videos, I figure the more people who know you, the more money you make, the more videos you produce :) Thus the more I can watch. I only hope to one day match the fit and finish you show in all your work.

Aaron

Hey Chris, hope you had a lovely holidays and are enjoying the new year. Wondering if you've got any update on Antikythera? It's been a while - curious how things are with the paper, the research, any of the production, etc... Cheers!

clickspring

Thank you mate :) Nothing to share publicly on the research yet, other than its progressing, albeit slower than I would like. Will keep you posted as soon as I am able to do so - Cheers :)
