So in Guangzhou (it's the capital of the province I live in), there's this hideous building shaped like a coin, it sits along the river but actually has nothing nearby and is home to the world's largest trading centre for raw plastic material... That's besides the point.

During the recent shooting of my new documentary my producer wanted to get some drone footage of it for an establishing shot of Guangzhou so he asked me to fly our expensive drone around it and I got some great shots, but then he asked me to fly it through the hole in the middle! I didn't want to and protested saying that not only was it probably not correct, but also that it's a difficult manoeuvre, but he insisted! So I reluctantly flew the drone around the rear of the building, lined it up and proceeded to fly through the middle of the coin...

Now you can clearly see in this screenshot from the footage that there are cables hanging all throughout the middle of the coin (probably to prevent drone flight or perhaps something structural) and because it was a very bright and sunny day I couldn't see them on the screen as I flew through until only at the last second I saw one pass by within an inch of the drone:

Almost....

Honestly, an inch or two to the left or the right would have been the end of that drone and also probably a whole lot of legal trouble as each drone in China need to be registered to the operator via way of phone number and passport, I knew I should have followed my gut feeling and for the rest of the trip I insisted that the producer follow my advice and way of flying the drone as it's my arse on the line at the end of the day!

Bottom line, don't try and fly a drone through that ugly coin building in Guangzhou and also get ready for some epic drone footage in my new documentary that should be out sometime in Late Nov / early Dec!

You're all so bloody awesome and I can't wait to see you all in the next video (it'll be a bit of a treat for anyone who enjoyed Conquering Northern China).

- Stay Awesome!

😅 phew, I was afraid that story wasn't going to end well. I'm a huge fan of the GDSs, people watching street scenes, and awesome soundtrack tying it all together. Absolutely beautiful moments that take me to another place wrapping up the episodes. Thank YOU.
