How do these episodes just keep getting better!?! This one was so heartbreaking to watch but that ending was so satisfying!! Still worried about where Crosshair ended up after all this though.

Hi Man

This episode was just absolute perfection. And to this day it is one of the highest rated episodes out of any Star Wars animated show. Before this episode came out the voice actor for the clones (Dee Bradley Baker) said this was his favourite episode out of the series. So we knew it was going to be special but oh boy, did they exceed our expectations. Everything from the cinematography, score, voice acting, writing to the overall feel of this was absolutely stunning. First off, Mayday was a really cool character. I always admired how both here and in the clone wars, the writers were able to make these small individual clone characters have such vibrant, interesting and distinct personalities. We knew Mayday for a total of twenty minutes, yet he is easily one of the most memorable characters of this season and his death actually had an emotional impact on the audiance. I especially liked how he was able to combat Crosshair's sarcastic personality with his own funny jabs and comments and was able to get Crosshair to actually like him. And that's saying a lot since it's pretty hard for him to like anyone especially a reg. (Cody is basically the only reg he actually ever liked before this) The fact that he was a reg makes this so much more impactful as well. Throughout this show and their arc in the Clone Wars, we saw how Crosshair especially hated the regs. He saw them as inferior and an annoyance. Hell, he had such disrespect for the regs that he literally said to leave Echo behind in S7 because he was "just another reg" which even caused Rex to lose his cool and resulted in a fight between the two. So the fact that he was paired with a reg in this episode was such a powerful choice by the writers. And Crosshair's eventual decision to risk his life to save Mayday was so much more powerful because of this. I especially like how their earlier conversation about "dead weight" came full circle with Mayday being trapped and injured but Crosshair choosing to save him instead of leaving him behind because of "dead weight". (which is what the raiders did to one of their own in the cave) Crosshair's willpower in this was also absolutely nuts. The fact that he carried Mayday on his shoulders for miles in a brutal snowstorm without his helmet protecting him from the cold is just absolutely insane. This goes to show how much he grew to like and value Mayday over the course of the few days they've spent together. But my absolute favourite thing in the episode was how they used the vulture metaphor throughout this episode. Having a vulture basically be a visual representation of not just death but obsoleteness. The vulture is basically a representation of the clones and what their current fate is. All of them grew obsolete in the Empires eyes and they are just circling around them wating to take the scraps and whatever they have left. And notice how throuhgout this entire episode the vulture is always following Crosshair. Which is a very cool way to visually represent how he is just like the regs. Wating for his turn on the choppers block. He is not special and especially valuable to the Emprie like he thought last season. Eventually it all comes to head with the final scene where Crosshair is kneeling down around Maydays dead body. But then he sees the shadow of the vulture. God, I still get full chills at that moment to this day. How he immediately reacts to the vulture with pure rage, defying his end, defying what the world under the empire intends for him, in his last act of defiance against obsoliteness he stands up and shoots the officer. The symbology, score and cinematography in that scene was perfect and they said all that without a single word being uttered. That's storytelling folks. All in all, this is easily my favourite episdoe in the series. 10/10 all around. Can't wait for the rest of the season and of course season 3!

In some way since Kamino got destroyed and he got left there Crosshair's been in denial or he had a small feeling but didn't wanna think about it, how Empire truly did not care about clones but more specifically Him since he's an Enhanced Clone so he thought he was an exception or different and if he proved his loyalty he'd still be valued somewhat even though to the empire it made no difference but he still gave them the benefit of the doubt his desire to be somewhat valued by being at least loyal really allowed him to "hope" that he'll be useful to them, and each time it really stretched out to the thinnest till all his self-respect and self-worth was gone, it really took this brutal "assignment" to push him over the edge and make him 100% realize he really is nothing to them, he can't deny it now.

This is by far my favourite episode of the show, just seeing everything Crosshair went through in this was so amazing and did such a great job at having this character draw out so much emotion from the audience. You’re absolutely right about this episode, every aspect of it was stunning and so well put together. I’m still not over how much this made me feel, it’s one thing to get all the technical aspects down but to actually form such an emotional connection to the viewer and create an impactful experience is just something else. Mayday was fantastic and it’s so still awesome that the writers can have such versatility with the Clones, not one has felt the same and Mayday stands above, his sacrifice at the end I’m sure is what saved Crosshair, his giving his life was the ultimate show of loyalty Crosshair has been longing for so of course he’d never give up and would get him back to the base. But yeah the writing has been absolutely amazing, it took 2 episodes with Crosshair to go from himself thinking he’s superior to the Regs to him risking his life to save one. Also, the dead weight part of this was great, getting to see how the enemies treat ‘dead weight’ was basically seeing how Crosshair would have acted when he was fully committed to the Empire so the whole thing basically got to act as a mirror for Crosshair to view himself, it was the thing that brock his delusion of the Empire, the enemies who treat their teammates like this are supposed to be the plague of the galaxy which the Empire is meant to purge yet his commander has the exact same views. His will power I’m still so certain came from his whole loyalty thing, having Mayday save him Crosshair had to return the favour and ultimately that ‘moral agreement’ saved Crosshair’s life as if he wasn’t so determined to save Mayday he’d probably wouldn’t have had the strength to get back to the base. The vulture was absolutely perfection!! It’s swooping in at the end, giving Crosshair the realisation was incredibly impactful, it said so much about what was happening without a word of dialogue, it blows my mind what the writers have been capable of with this episode and it makes me so excited to see what else they do.

Crosshair’s character is so incredibly well-written, he’s become such a tragic character. I’ve gone from being annoyed at his decisions to just wanting him to be happy and find meaning more than anything. It’s still so shocking that he’s basically been able to carry a whole half of this story all by himself with the Batch doing the rest. This whole episode was such an amazing insight for what was going on inside his head and just getting to see him processing the reality of what the Empire really thinks of him was such a painful journey but also so satisfying when he brock out of his delusion and finally realised he’s nothing to the people he’s given his life to.
