Yeah.... This is THE EPISODE..... the episode that changed everything. It was here that people understood that Adventure Time was a lot more than just a silly and fun cartoon. We already had snippets of a bigger story like with Susan Strong or The Lich.... but it was here that Adventure Time demonstrated that it could not only get Bigger... but also Deeper. Simon Petrikov...... Perhaps the BIGGEST reveal in the whole show. It's crazy how it completely changes your perspective on Ice King. The reveal also gave us context as to why the Ice King is so obssesed with princesses, because they are manifestations of the remnants of his old memories... memories of his own princess... Betty. Interesting that you noted that Betty looks like Bubblegum... the fandom had other ideas however.... since Betty looks remarkably similar to Doctor Princess, especially both of them wear glasses and in one of the photos betty appears wearing a lab coat just like Doctor Princess always wears (but this was just one theory among many others). You know... you might think that Ice King inmediatly forgetting about the tapes after the big reveal is annoying... but it could be very tragic considering that the Crown pretty much erased all of his original memories.... which in itself could be interpreted as an Allegory for Alzheimer and old people who suffer it. And the fact that this Big Reveal was done in a Christmas Special of all things, like... when this episode aired... Holiday specials in cartoons were used as simple fun stories themed after the specific holiday...... But Adventure Time completely changed what we can expect from this type of episodes (You can even see the ripple effect of this in shows like Amphibia). (Again... i can confirm to you that "Phil" is just a visual gag character, he's meant to be the self-insert of the show's Lead Character Designer Phil Rynda, even tho he looks human the producer of the show Adam Muto confirmed that he's only a "Humanoid" creature, not an actual human). Either way..... all i can say in conclusion is that........... everyone agrees that "Holly Jolly Secrets Part 2" is the episode that truly separates Early Adventure Time from the rest of the show.
