I’ve been working with the Press Play Blog on Indie Wire for a while now and several months ago, Indie Wire was bought out, but the blogs weren’t. So Press Play has been looking for a home for almost six months and they finally found one—NoFilmSchool!

I pitched NoFilmSchool a series last month and they greenlit it. It’s on film movements and the first one went up today! Hope you like it!

(And just to make sure there isn’t any confusion, the videos in this series will NOT be patreon supported.)

Thanks so much for your continued support!

Video Essay: German Expressionism, Explained

That dark stylish beauty synonymous with directors like Guillermo del Toro and Tim Burton has its roots in Germany during the 1910s, 20s, and 30s. Here, realism is done away with in favor of the distorted and the surreal. Mirrors, large shadows, and optical effects are abundant.

Great job Tyler! Do you know if any of the German expressionism films are available on DVD or the web?

Thanks! Most of the expressionist movies I referenced in the video are on YouTube in their entirety and in great quality. Dr. Mabuse The Gambler: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2LN_P_KRuM" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2LN_P_KRuM</a> The Testement of Dr. Mabuse: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udVcEcGYw-Q" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udVcEcGYw-Q</a> The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMabJu9UtRs" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMabJu9UtRs</a> Metropolis: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGgon2YeISw" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGgon2YeISw</a> Nosferatu: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhC3WHQGUNY" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhC3WHQGUNY</a> M: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3rWLm_PAbc" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3rWLm_PAbc</a> I know the Criterion Collection has M on Bluray, but I recently saw that they also have a DVD of The Testament of Dr. Mabuse and the special features look awesome.
